B.C. Bergerson of Dalton, Minn. has been hired as the new assistant cashier at the First National Bank.

The 17th of May celebration to be held at Lawrence Point Promises to be a big affair. The program committee with Attorney Markve of Glenwood as chairman is busy getting up a splendid program. There will be a couple of baseball games, one between Glenwood and Starbuck High Schools. A shooting gallery will be in operation all day. Refreshment stands with lemonade and peanuts will be there.

I have bought the dray from Lewis Stenson and respectfully solicit your business in that line. I shall continue to give the very best service possible P.C. Heegard.

Hans Rasmusson was arrested Saturday on the charge of giving away liquor in an alley with two of his friends and he was supplying the drinks. He was taken into custody and sentenced to 60 days in the county jail.

From April 27, 1923

One of the most delightful affairs of the school year was the Junior-Senior Banquet given at the town hall Saturday evening. The use of crepe paper in the Sr. colors, reseda green and old rose, transformed the room into a fairyland. Following is the menu: Oyster stew, Roast chicken with dressing, mashed potatoes, buns, olives, fruit salad, ice cream, Lady Baltimore cake, and coffee. Clifford Schultz, Pres. of the Jr. class gave the welcome and Harriet Kirkwold the response. Supt. Jorstad gave a very fine talk on the benefits of high school training. 

A fine new Thor electric mangle was installed in the hospital this week. This has been one of the greatest needs for a long time, and the Hospital Auxiliary which was organized last fall too hold of the situation with characteristics energy and decided to install one at once, and then get busy and raise the money. 

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Sylvester of Greenland last Monday. 

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ross Newbery of Hancock on Tuesday.

Funeral services were held for John O. Ronnie on Sunday, Rev. G. O. Forde officiating. He is survived by his widow and eight children: Orlando, Martin, Edward, Norvald, Magnus, Julia, Selma and Mrs. Melvin Berg. One son died eight years ago.

The home talent play “I’m So Nervous” presented by a cast of young people from White Bear Lake and sponsored by the White Bear Lake Study Club drew a packed house at the Town Hall Wed. evening. Following is the cast of Characters; Sigma Bardahl, Tegner Hustad, Selma Tollefson, Alma Gorder, Helen Hustad, Melvin Olmeim, Reuben Olmeim, Harold Kjorstad and Magdalene Aslakson. The play was directed by Eldred Gorder. The Indherred Orchestra furnished music throughout the evening.

Four buildings on the main street of Cyrus were burned to the ground last Sunday morning. The buildings destroyed were Buesings store, North American produce, Dr. H. Linde’s office and drug store and the Cyrus Mutual Telephone Company’s exchange.

Miss Ruth Wollan, daughter of Ole Wollan of White Bear Lake and Ralph Stewart of Minneapolis were married at Sisseton, South Dakota on Saturday, April 22. 

Funeral services for Mrs. A. J. Nordberg will be held Monday at the Minnewaska Lutheran church, Rev. O. C. Dahlager officiating. Mrs. Nordberg is survived by her husband and four children; Mrs. William Scheflo of Hoffman; John of Washington D. C., Mrs. Ottar Flack and Arthur of Starbuck; one sister, Mrs. Olaf Smedstad; and two brothers, John and Christ Brenden.

Relatives and Friends helped Julian, 2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Barsness celebrate his birthday Sunday. 

Mr. and Mrs. Luverne Barsness, who bought the Albert Jackson residence, moved in this week.

Marvel Larson Starting working at Morngans Wednesday. Mrs. Roy Thorstad is the new waitress at Morgans. 

An Announcement was received here by the Stangeland and Dahlseng families stating that Corporal and Mrs. Orlando Dahlseng are the happy parents of a baby boy, John Orlando, born April 21. 

Obert Foss, son of Mrs. Josephine Pederson is working for the International Harvester Co. in Minneapolis as an office boy. 

Sharon Marie, Infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Tollefson was baptized Sunday at West Zion Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. J. Skaaden and Mr. and Mr. Edwin Erickson.

Claremont Pederson and Teddy Ross have enlisted in the Navy and left Minneapolis Tuesday evening for Camp Waldron, Farragut, Idaho for their preliminary training.

“Meet Me in St. Louis,” a comedy in three acts will be presented by the Senior Class May 1. Those taking part will be Roger Pederson, JoAnne Jackson, Carmen Heegard, Beverly Olson, Jerri Thompson, Mary Ellen Kyvig, Carol Johnson, Arlin Benjaminson, Shirley Rostad, Beverly Evjen, John Gorder, Vada Peterson, Stanley Sweet, Maynard Stadsvold, Ronald Johnson and DeWayne Jackson.

Donald M. Aaberg, who was wounded in Korea is now released from the 343rd General Hospital in Japan and is stationed at Camp Otsu, Japan in a headquarter office there. 

Mr. and Mrs. Perry Dullum are parents of a baby daughter born April 25. She weighed 8 lbs. 8 oz. 

An 8 lb. girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Hoberg of Ortonville Wednesday morning. 

Friends in this vicinity have received announcements from Mr. and Mrs. Nels Martinson announcing the wedding of their daughter, Mariam Doris, to Donald E. Fisher on April 11 in Seattle, WA at the bride’s home. The couple will make their home in Seattle.

The dead body of Clifford Erlandson, 50-years-old resident of Cyrus, was found in his mobile home on Wednesday morning of last week. The discovery was made by two friends, Wes Pusher and Clifford Hanse, who had gone to the trailer house to look for Erlandson. It was assumed he had been dead about a week. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Starbuck Funeral Home. 

Births: A son, Joel William, to Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Burrington (Ardis Smedstad) of Spokane, Wash. on April 22; a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Johnson (Gail Smedstad) of Minneapolis April 23. 

Baptisms: Dean Larry, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kittelson was baptized April 21 at Fron Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Blair of Minneapolis. 

Thomas Michael, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Arlyn Peterson (Janice Johnshoy) was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Minneapolis Sunday. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnshoy.

Cathy Jean,infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Stueber (Beverly Olson) of White Bear Lake was baptized at Redeemers Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake April 21. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Al Allers of Goodhue.

The Starbuck Village Council in its regular monthly meeting discussed and acted on several items of business. Several bids were received by the council on the garbage hauling, all different, and after considerable discussion, no action was taken on the bids for the time being. They are exploring alternative possibilities as to the best method of garbage service.

The Pope County committee formed recently to study the health needs of the area, met Wednesday evening at Glenwood to hear a report from the Central Minnesota Health Planning Council, A request made by them a few weeks ago.

The Starbuck Fire Department has been busy lately. Wednesday afternoon they were called to control a grass and weed fire north of the city dump which threatened the buildings on the Fred Yeagar farm home. No serious damage was reported. 

Saturday afternoon they were called to the Ann Rundquist residence to extinguish a chimney fire with no resulting damage.

Leo. T. Dahl was honored as Citizen of the Year at a Lowry Lions sponsored banquet at the Lowry School last Thursday.

Luanne Blok, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Blok and Nathan Brecht, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orlie Brecht were notified recently that they have been selected as winners in the 1984 NSP Electric Safety Poster Contest. Each one will receive a share of NSP stock.

Lynn Schwartz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Schwartz, of Watertown, S.D. and John Esser of Howard, S.D. were married at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown on March 19. The couple will make their home in Howard, S.D.

Funeral services for Edna Wrolson, 77, were held from the Nora Lutheran Church April 16. She is survived by her husband, Tommy; one son, Carlton and one daughter, Mrs. John (Diane) Dosdall.

Debra Frank, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Frank, and practical nursing student at North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton received her cap at ceremonies held April 21.

A Douglas county man has been sentenced to eight and one-half years in prison for sexually assaulting a Glenwood woman in 1990. He was also fined $610 and ordered to pay the woman $10,274 restitution for counseling costs.

Funeral services for Herbert Bly, 75, were held at West Zion Lutheran Church April 30. He is survived by his wife, Arlene and one sister in California. 

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Glenwood Retirement Village’s new development – Parkview Court – has been set for May 16. 

Kim Ronning, daughter of Wayne and Jan Ronning was named Starbuck American Legion representative to attend the Minnesota Girls State. Named alternate was Jennifer Lindquist, daughter of Ron and Ann Lindquist.

Becky Anderson isn’t a baker but her house always smells of sugar cookies. She loves scented candles and when she heard about the new phenomenon of soy candles she made her love her business. 

The Starbuck City Council made several decisions in the public works department at its regular meeting on April 16. The council has started to cut small items from the budget in preparation for possible steep cuts in local government.

Minnewaska Area Schools formally approved the releasing 43 employees last Tuesday, although some may be offered partial positions or get their jobs back. In a fairly somber moment near the end of the meeting board chair Tom Beuckens read the names which included `13 non-tenured teaching staff, 11 tenured teachers and 19 non-certified staff.

Gregory Schmidt, who has been serving as Chief Executive for MACCRAY School District, was named last week as the new Superintendent of Minnewaska Area Schools. The MAS board approved a three year agreement with Schmidt at a special meeting on Friday. 

The Starbuck City Council approved the hiring of Mitch Johnsrud as a full-time patrol officer at a special meeting on April 22. The hire is contingent on him passing the psych evaluation, physical and background check.

Minnewaska Area Schools will be experimenting with a new policy in the future called “bring your own device.” The policy would allow students to use their personal smart phones, laptops and tablet computers connected to the school district’s network to assist in school work.
