•  Arivia DeBoer and Ava Kollman both return for Lakers

Two Minnewaska golfers competed in the State Class AA Girls Golf Tournament at Ridges on Sand Creek in Jordan last Tuesday and Wednesday.  Competing at the state meet for the Lakers were sophomore Arivia DeBoer and freshman Ava Kollman.

DeBoer had a total of 167 over 36 holes (rounds of 84 and 83) to place 25th overall out of 88 golfers, while Kollman had a 187 total (98 and 89) to place 57th.

Grace Petzold, a senior from Providence Academy, won the Class AA girls title with a 145 total on rounds of 75 and 70, while first-day leader, Park Rapids senior Madysen Maninga, placed 11th overall after shooting a 74 the first day and 85 the second.

Kollman and DeBoer had placed fifth and sixth overall, respectively, during the Section 3AA Tourney, Wednesday, May 31 at Oakdale GC in Buffalo Lake.  Winning the section team title was Redwood Valley, which had a 679 two-day total to edge Minnewaska Area by 30 strokes.

Redwood Valley also had the top two golfers at the section meet as Julian Brown earned medalist honors during the section tourney with a score of 154 on rounds of 76 and 78 and teammate Mila Jenniges was second with a 155 total on rounds of 78 and 77.

Jenniges went on to place eighth at state with a 157 total (78-79), while Brown tied for 21st with a 165 total (79-86).

Other area top finishers at the state meet included:  ACGC freshman Brooke Brekke was 29th (82-88–170), Albany junior Sophia Anderson was 37th (88-89–177) and Redwood Valley also had golfers place 65th, 72nd, 74th and 81st.

•  At the Section 3AA meet this spring, Kollman shot a 167 total (81 and 86) to place fifth overall, while DeBoer had a 169 total (84 and 85) to place sixth.

Just missing out on a state berth this season was Annika DeBoer, who was eighth overall during the section meet with a 175 total (80 and 95).  She missed out on state by four strokes, while Lexi Barsness was 27th at the section meet with a 198 total.

•  The Laker girls won the WCC title this year, winning all eight meets for 56 total points.  BOLD was second with 46 points, followed by Melrose with 42, Benson with 28, Sauk Centre with 24, Morris with 18 and WCA with 10.

Ava Kollman had season lows this year of 38 at Melrose and 79 at WCA, while Arivia DeBoer has season lows of 38 at Benson and 81 at WCA.

•  Last year, at the state meet, the Bluejackets shot a 539 total (only 27 holes were played due to weather) to place fourth overall in the State Class AA meet.  Lake City won the title with a 27-hole total of 491 (330-161), followed by Fergus Falls with a 530 (357-173), Pequot Lakes in third with a 535 total (362-173) and the Bluejackets in fourth (366-173). Berkley Steffen had the top finish for the Bluejackets at state, shooting a 130 on rounds of 86 and 44 to place 21st, while Alissa Thorfinnson placed 25th (92-40–132) and Arivia DeBoer was 33rd (92-42–134).

•  Riley Larson closes out stellar golf career at MAHS

Riley Larson had rounds of 76 and 78 for a 154 total at the State Class AA Boys Golf Tournament last Tuesday and Wednesday to place 21st overall in his final state high school competition.

Larson also qualified to state last year when he shot a 169 total on rounds of 88 and 81 to place 65th.  The state golf meet took place at Ridges on Sand Creek in Jordan.

Staples-Motley sophomore Carter White won the overall Class AA title with a 144 total on rounds of 72 and 72 to win by three strokes.

Three golfers tied for second with 147s, while another four tied for fifth with 148s.  Morris Area’s Charlie Hanson, who won the overall WCC title this spring, placed 14th with rounds of 75 and 76.

The first-day leader, Kimball senior Luke Ashbrook, had a 70 on the first day, but slipped to 88 the second day for a 158 total and 33rd place.

NLS’ Nixon Harrier was 33rd with a 158 total, while other area golfers included WCA’s Mitchell Dewey also tied for 33rd with a 158, NLS’ Blake Kath was 40th (159) and his teammate Gabe Truscinski was 44th (160), while Owen Sudenga of Luverne was 55th (165) and NLS, which qualified as a team, also had golfers placed 72nd, 82nd and 85th out of 88 total golfers.

Totino-Grace won the team title with rounds of 299 and 299 for a 598 total, while Holy Family was four shots back in second with a 602 total on rounds of 295 and 307.

T-G had golfers placed 2nd, 5th, 5th and 24th, while Holy Family had golfers place 5th, 10th, 14th and 18th.

NLS placed seventh overall with a 645 total and Albany was eight at 655.

•  Larson earned his second-straight trip to the state tourney by tying for sixth place at the Section 3AA Golf Tourney at the Oakdale Golf Course in Buffalo Lake, Wednesday, May 31.

The Lakers, coached by Dave Drexler, Dion Harste and Brett Thorfinnson, finished tied for fourth in the team standings as NLS won the  team title by nine strokes over Luverne and Marshall.

•  The Lakers won the boys WCC golf title this year by one point over West Central Area.  Minnewaska Area won the final meet by five strokes over WCA to earn the title.

Minnewaska Area had 59 points for the season, followed by WCA with 58, Morris Area-CA with 42, Melrose Area and Benson with 31 each, Montevideo with 27, Sauk Centre with 21 and BOLD with 13.

Larson has season lows this year of 33 at Montevideo and 34 at Morris for nine holes and a 68 at Tipsinah GC at WCA for 18 holes.
