A man was soundly thrashed by his wife last week for not paying his newspaper subscription after she had given him the cash to do it. May her crown be trimmed to order and her harp have an extra string. 

Everyone is busy making hay between showers. 

The corn crop certainly will be a bumper this year. The farmers will almost need ladders to pick the ears off. 

If it is worthwhile to build a silo, it certainly is worthwhile to build the very best. The Playford Cement Silo is by far the best. It is rat proof.  It is wind proof. Let us tell you about it at our office. E.J. Jones Lumber Yard, J.S. Skoglund, manager.

100 YEARS AGO

The nation bows its head in grief and sorrow over the unexpected death of our beloved president Warren G. Harding, who suffered a stroke of apoplexy Thursday and passed away at 9:30 p.m. 

Confirmation services in the Norwegian language will be held at the Fron Church on Sunday. Following is a list of the confirmation class: Borghild Brenden, Mildred Dalva, Lucille Smedstad, Margot Wollan, John Engebretson, Oscar Hagestuen, Benrik Johnson, and Ovid Overstad. 

At the St. John’s Y.P.S. to be held at Carn Tagen’s Sunday afternoon, the following  program will be given: violin solo, Arthur Tagen; paper, Melvin Moe; piano solo, Cora Kamrud; and a violin solo by Dr. H. Linde. 

The Fron Y.P.S. meets at Christ Brendens on Sunday and the following program will be given: piano solo, Milleanna Englund; reading, Harris Nelson; clarinet solo, Rev. Johnshoy; address, Rev. J. Mason of Montevideo; vocal solo, Mrs. O. V. Opheim; and a recitation by Irving Helgeson.

The Misses Agnes and Laura Forde recently were honored for their musical accomplishments by being requested to take part in the Sunday afternoon concert at the Grauman Theatre in Los Angelson, California.

Saturday and Sunday turned out to be the two hottest days this summer with the mercury hitting 104 Saturday and 106 on Sunday. The heat wave broke Monday morning, but very little rain has fallen. 

Dr. H. Linde of Cyrus has announced that he will build a drug store and office in Cyrus. 

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hagen on Tuesday. 

Marshall Allen Giesen, 16 months old son of Dr. and Mrs. A. F. Giesen passed away Tuesday morning. Funeral services were conducted by Father Petermeier at the Church of the Sacred Heart at  Glenwood on Wednesday morning.

Miss Blanche Lingen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Lingen and Sgt. Robert L. Remington of Villard were married August 3 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. The groom is in the Army and will return to F. Monmouth, New Jersey and the bride will continue her work at the County agent’s office in Glenwood. 

Delois Dahlin has resigned her position as office girl for Dr. W.W. Larson. Ilve Halvorson is taking her place. 

Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Johnson entertained relatives and friends for dinner Sunday in honor of Gary’s second birthday. 

Miss Ida Erickson, 56, for the past 13 years a teacher in the Starbuck Public School, died early Saturday morning, July 31 at her home in Nelson. She had been ill for some time and was forced to resign her work here shortly before school closed last May.

Two Starbuck Boy Scouts have the distinction of being initiated in the White Arrow on Friday at the Wilderness Camp. Byron Helgeson was voted in his troop last year at camp and Clifford Lee this year on his canoe trip. 

Miss Ada DeCamp of Chokio and Harry Erickson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Erickson of Starbuck were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Chokio July 12. Th couple will make their home in Starbuck.

Miss Ruby Anderson and Mr. Julius Aaberg were married at Fron Lutheran Church August 1. The couple will make their home in Starbuck.

Miss Angeline Kamrud, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Kamrud of Parkers Prairie and William Nelson, son of Mrs. Emma Nelson, Elbow Lake were united in marriage at the First Lutheran Church of Parkers Prairie on Saturday, April 13, Rev. Maynard Hanson officiating. The bride was attended by the groom’s three sisters, Mary Ann Nelson, Mrs. Beverly Holm and Ardys Nelson. The groom’s attendants were Ronald Nelson, Christian and Julius Kamrud. 

Wedding vows were exchanged Saturday, June 15 by Joan Knobel and Carlton J. Naseth in Davenport, N.Dak., Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Knobel of Davenport and Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Naseth of Willmar. 

Funeral services for Mrs. John Molander were held from the Norunga Lutheran Church on July 30, Rev. Wagner officiating. She is survived by her husband; two sons, LeRoy and Wallace; five daughters, Mrs. Lionell MacIver (Myrtle), Mrs. Bob Hawkinson (Gladys), Mrs. Hubert Nordgren (Dorothy) and Mrs. David Opheim (JoAnn). Also surviving are 14 grandchildren.

Supt. Ernest Janisch announced this week that David Nilles has been hired to replace Tom Grosland as Starbuck High School band instructor. He is a native of Casselton, North Dakota, having been raised on a farm near there. He graduated from Central Cass High School in 1968.

A new source of funds should be available, beginning this fall, to students throughout Minnesota for college, vocational, trade and agricultural education. A new government-sponsored student Loan Marketing Association (“Sallie Mae”) was announced at a Minnesota news conference this week. 

An election will be held on October 1st, 1973 to form a district hospital board for the newly formed Western Pope County Hospital District. This election is being called by the Village of Starbuck since it is the most populous precinct in the new district.

Funeral services for Olga Hendrickson, 84, were held from the Fron Lutheran Church July 14. She is survived by her husband, Carl of Starbuck and two sons, Charles of Faribault and James of Crystal. 

Births: a daughter, Amy Michelle to Mrs. DeAnna Burnham and the late Michael Burnham July 27. Amy was born on her father’s birthday; a son, Nicholas Michael, to Mr. and Mrs. Mike (Linda Jergenson) Sorenson of Washburn, Wisconsin. 

Lisa Swartz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Swartz of Starbuck is currently enrolled at Lowthian College in Minneapolis. Her major will be fashion merchandising. 

The following from the area have been named the Spring Quarter Dean’s List at UMM: Elizabeth Aal, Deanna Amundson, Jon Blocher, Brian Carlson, Brent Carlson, Jon Ivesdal, Shari Kittelson, Linden Pederson, all of Starbuck and Steve Pawlitschek of Cyrus. 

Funeral services for Gerda Johnson, 79, were held from the First Baptist Church in Glenwood July 26th. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Victor (Beatrice) Rosengren of Alexandria and Jean Johnson of Plymouth; and two sons, Reinhold and Warner of Farwell.

The Minnewaska District Hospital and the Starbuck Clinic are pleased to announce that Dr. Stephen Hanson will be joining the medical staff in Sept. Dr. Hanson is a certified Family Physician.

Doug and Delores Amundson of Lowry announce the sale of their store, D&D Market in Lowry to Tom and Anita Hendricks of Lowry, effective July 26. The store will now be known as A&T Market. 

Tyler John Baukol was born July 27 at the Minnewaska District Hospital to Steve and Deanna (Ellefson) Baukol of Starbuck. 

Eric Doty, son of Bill and Diane Doty of Starbuck has accepted employment as a machinist at Omni Tool in Minneapolis. He is a graduate of Alexandria Technical College.

Soeren Brueckner could have gone anywhere in the world and he chose Pope County. Brueckner, who’s from Germany, came back to stay with the family that helped him learn to drive and learn American culture. He lived with the Gary Payne family as an exchange student in 2000 to 2001 and they got along extremely well and remain close, so really, for Brueckner, it wasn’t a stretch for him to choose to come back here. 

After several months of discussion and several meetings, a three to two vote on July 25, with Steve Dinsmore and Larry Noyes dissenting, led to a decision to go ahead with curb, gutter, and storm sewer on Second Street.

No one likes cutting budgets, but it seems that for the county, cuts are coming without too much pain. County board chairman Larry Kittelson reported at the Board’s regular meeting on July 23, that he, commissioner Keith Naig, and Mary Pischke met with all the department heads and at that meeting they heard that cuts are coming along.

Starbuck hosted a Tea Party at the Lakeshore Park Saturday afternoon, July 20. It was planned and organized by William Floyd of Starbuck and people attended from Hancock, Morris, Cyrus, Brandon, Alexandria, Browns Valley, Olivia, St. Cloud, Glenwood and Starbuck. The Tea Party is not connected to any political party but is made up of like-minded folks who believe in core values and the Constitution. 

It’s that time of year again to put your paddle in the water and race. Starbuck’s 6th annual Dragon Boat Festival is unique to the Starbuck area and will take place this year on Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10. 

County boards in more than half of Minnesota’s 87 counties have voted to implement a $10 per vehicle wheelage tax in 2014 to use toward local road and bridge improvements, taking advantage of a change in state law that expanded the authority to impose this tax from the seven-county metro area to the entire state. In total, 47 counties – which are home to more than 70% of Minnesotans – will impose the tax next year.
