On Sunday evening occurred the wedding of Miss Lina Mittuen to Mr. John Monson. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. E. Mittuen. The wedding took place at the home of the bride’s parents in New Prairie. 

On Sunday evening, August 24, occurred the wedding of Miss Sophia Johanna Hoium to Mr. Melvin Lelesve of McIntosh, MN. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Hoium of New Prairie. The wedding took place at the home of the bride’s parents. 

An ordinance has been published prohibiting automobiles or motorcycles to run at a higher speed than 10 miles an hour in the village of Starbuck. 

100 YEARS AGO

From Aug. 24, 1923

The joint choir of Indherred, St. John’s and Immanuel will present the cantata “Faith and Praise” by John West at Immanuel at three o’clock and at Indherred at eight o’clock on Sunday. There are about 125 voices in the choir. 

Aage Peterson was in his store today for the first time in a long while. In spite of his advanced age, he looks very hale and hearty and enjoys being around his old place of business. 

Mrs. Ragnhild Kjorstad has purchased a Ford touring car, the same being delivered on Thursday of last week. 

The Pope County Poultry Association will hold their fourth annual show in Starbuck in December. F. O. Jellum is secretary of the Association.

The Starbuck Schools will open next Tuesday, September 5. The anticipated enrollment this year is 180 in the grades and 125 in high school. Below are the names of the teachers and the grades they will teach: W. A. Peterson, Superintendent, English III, English IV, Social Science and Dramatics; H. R. Engebretson, Principal, Science, Mathematics, Athletics, Physical Ed for boys; Lillian Charlesworth, English I, English II, Latin I, Latin II, Library, Dramatics, Glee Club; Dorothy Olson, Ancient History, Biology, Physical Ed for girls, girls’ basketball; Claremont Gorder, Science, Mathematics, Business Training. First Grade, Lilly M. Johnson; second grade, Mary E. Caughren, third and fourth B grades, Alice B. Lidstrom; fourth A and fifth grades, Pearl Hammond; seventh A and eighth grades, Mabel Hanes. 

County Supt. Harold L. Eastlund will leave Thursday for the State Fair, accompanied by Vivian Aslagson and Bernice Berge, spelling contestants and Llewellyn Hagen and Earl Thompson as declamatory contestants. These four people will represent Pope County in their respective contests at the Minn. State Fair.

From Aug. 26, 1943

Miss Florance Larson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lars Hanson, became the bride of Rudolph Schiller, Jr. of Hutchinson August 15. The couple will make their home in New London where the groom is employed.

Donald Berg celebrated his 11th birthday Tuesday evening during the blackout.

Funeral services for Mrs. Inga Anderson, 76, were held from the Swedish Mission Church Aug. 18. She is survived by the following children: Mrs. Theodore (Ellen) Berg, Mrs. Adolph (Ruth) Anderson and Victor and David Anderson.

Miss Ruth Petit of Glenwood and Arlane Brandvold, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. O. Brandvold were married August 22 at the groom’s home. The couple will make their home on the Brenden farm, which the Brandvolds purchased several years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schwendemann are the proud parents if an 8 lb. 2 oz. baby boy born August 20. 

Janice Nelson of Ayr, ND and Erling Linde, son of Dr. and Mrs. Linde of Cyrus were married August 9 at Olivet Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in Cando, ND.

Funeral services for Annette Brevig, 78, were held August 15 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She is survived by two brothers, Ludwig and Thomas and two sisters Mrs. A. C. Glaubitz and Mrs. Carl Hagen. 

Miss Ann Teigen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lars Teigen of Starbuck and Carl Lee of Badger, MN were married August 16 at Indherred Lutheran Church. The Couple will make their home in St. Paul.

Mrs. Donald Krussow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Newman Erickson was among those who received a cap at graduation exercises from the Tacoma Vocational Technical Institute of Practical Nursing on July 25.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Porter (Janice Walter) of Menlo Park, CA, are the parents of a daughter, Gail Megan, born August 17.

Paul J. Klevann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Klevann and Curtis Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Jackson, have volunteered as members of the U.S. Air Force Aerospace Team and departed August 14 for Lackland Air Force Base, Texas for basic training.

Miriam Irene, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Fiorbord was baptized Sunday at East Zion Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Bob Pederson and Mr. and Mrs. Denis Fiorbord.

Cost of Living Council has allowed an increase in fee rate charges for registered nurses in private duty from $35.00 to $37.63 for eight hours of nursing service. The last fee change was in 1970. 

Twenty-one residents of the newly formed Western Pope County Hospital District have filed as candidates for the Board of Directors who will administer the new district. Filings closed last Friday. The election will be held on October 1st.

The Starbuck Public School opens its 1973-74 session on Monday. Five new teachers will be making their first classes here. There will again be ten bus routes to pick up students throughout the area. Enrollment is expected to be about the same as last year with approximately 250 students in the elementary section and a little over 300 in junior and senior high.

Michael Hruby resigned as Superintendent of the Cyrus school to accept the superintendent’s position at Sandston, MN.

A daughter, Amanda Jane was born to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Egdorf (Pat Amundson) of Minneapolis. 

Chelsea Ann West of Starbuck and Bradley Scott Razink of Benson were married July 29 at the courthouse in St. Cloud. The couple will make their home in St. Cloud. 

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Williams will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house Sept. 4. 

The Starbuck Stars will advance to the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament next Sunday to be held at Arlington. The Stars won the Region 9B championship last Sunday from the Barrett Pioneers. 

Cheryl Tverberg, a graduate of NDSU and Brad Smith of St. Paul Park have been hired as new teachers for the Cyrus school. Tverberg will teach social studies and physical education and Smith will be the Industrial  Arts teacher.

Wayne Norby has accepted the position of Minnewaska Area High School Building Superintendent.

Funeral services for Mabel Hoverud, 85, were held at West Zion Lutheran Church July 9. She is survived by one daughter, Helen Ann Hoverud.

Donna Mae Mack of Ivanhoe and Matt Wade Rutledge of Starbuck, were married May 22 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe. The couple will make their home in Hayfield.

Minnewaska Lutheran Church celebrated its 110th anniversary August 15.

Funeral services for Edwin Yarger, 75, were held at First Lutheran Church in Minot, ND Aug. 16. He is survived by one son, Rev. Lee Yarger of Minot; and one daughter, Bonnie Yarger of Minneapolis.

Changes will be abound at Starbuck Elementary School this year and one of the biggest is in the principal’s office. Dorothy Jenum will now sit at the helm of SES, E. N. Nordgaard and Villard Academy. 

Ever since Starbuck was hit with a severe storm that carried strong winds on July 4 and blew the sign right over, it’s been sitting on the ground awaiting its fate. It is now expected the sign will be up in a few short weeks. City Superintendent Gary Koos said the new sign will be much sturdier than the current one. 

At the Starbuck Area Chamber of Commerce board meeting on Aug. 18, it was reported that County Day was a success and that the merchants group hopes to organize it again next year. John Samuelson of the merchants group told the chamber that involve said it reached their expectations, though they also found some things that could be changed.

The Pope County HRA/EDA decided to set a preliminary budget levy of $300,000 for 2014 at their regular meeting on August 21. The preliminary date to set the levy is September 15 and the date final budget levies are due is in December. The amount set for the preliminary levy can be lowered but can’t be raised on the final levy. 

Like the recent razed Culligan buildings in Glenwood, Starbuck is currently home to a tax forfeited property that is a safety hazard and has been described as “blight.” Because of its tax forfeited status, the property, located at 610 Hagenson Street, has been turned over to the county under state law. The county now has to decide how best to deal with the issue. 

In just one week, students will once again fill the classrooms of Minnewaska Area Schools. And this year, students and staff will dive in to the school year with a new superintendent leading the way. Greg Schmidt officially took the helm as Minnewaska Area Schools Superintendent on July 1. Before coming to Minnewaska, Schmidt served as the superintendent of MAARCRAY Public Schools for seven years. Before that he and his family lived in North Mankato for nearly two decades.
