Linotype operator celebrates 86th birthday

Sept. 12, 1963 An elderly Glenwood man became Lake Minnewaska’s first drowning victim of the year. The accident occurred when he and a friend were fishing fairly close to shore out from the Lakeside Ballroom and a combination of the waves and his movement in the boat capsized it.

Around 125 youngsters participated in the annual VFW effort to get reflective tape on bikes owned by local kids. Pictured with their bikes and trikes were Mark Hoven, John Gloege, Scott Peterson and John Hanson.

It was mostly a bad week in gridiron action as the Lakers of Glenwood and the Elbow Lake Eagles battled to a 0-0 finish in a game filled with fumbles and penalties. The Villard Mallards got whipped by Evansville 68-0. The only bright spot was the Starbuck Bucks’ win over Clinton 32-6.

Sept. 13, 1973 – Official school enrollment figures for the Glenwood district were at 1,398 with 110 seniors in a class set to graduate in the spring.

The annual Extension Education Day started off with a welcome from County Home Council President Mrs. Paul Billehus. Pictured in the Tribune participating in the event were Mrs. Harold Meyer of Starbuck, Harriet Staffanson of Farwell and Christine Tauber of rural Glenwood.

Ann Bickle presented Hospital Auxiliary President Jean Mattson with a check toward a nursing scholarship. The monies came from the bead work Bickle did as a hobby. She was the organizer and first president of the Glenwood Hospital Auxiliary as well as the state organization.

Sept. 8, 1983 – It was hot in Glenwood and Pope County on Friday during this week. How hot was it? It was so hot that classes in District No. 612 schools and in other area schools were canceled. It was so hot that the kickoff for the Glenwood-Ortonville football game was delayed until the temperature had dropped. It was so hot that the thermometer rose to 96 degrees in the middle of the afternoon. Temperatures on the east side of Glenwood’s high school were between 84 to 88 degrees by mid morning, depending on the location of the room.

The Glenwood City Commission had proposed that city residents should place their garbage on the curbs for pickup rather than the alleys. City residents told the commissioners at their regular meeting that the idea was “a rotten one.” Twenty-five or more residents showed up at the second reading of the ordinance.

C.J. Applen, the Tribune’s veteran linotype operator, was still on the job on his 86th birthday. Applen had owned the Cyrus Dispatch and had worked part time for the Tribune for years, setting up job work though the Tribune hadn’t used the linotype for the newspaper since 1969.

Sept. 13, 1993 – The city’s 1994 proposed budget was the first item of business  on the Sept. 7 meeting agenda, but it took less than 10 minutes for the Glenwood City Commission to accept the budget. The proposed expenditures of $2,490,439 were $20,070 (8 percent) less than the 1993 budget. However the proposed 1994 revenues of $2,401,873 were $53,283 (21.7 percent) lower than the current year.

Pope County commissioners approved a budget calling for a levy increase of 4.5 percent, but they intended to trim that to 3 percent before it was finalized. The board set a preliminary 1994 levy of $3,024,539 up from $2,857,623 for 1993. But the board planned to trim that by 1.5 percent by December, which would reduce the 1994 figure by $81,000.

Athletes of the week were seniors Josh Majerus for football and seventh-grader Morgan Domier for swimming, both from Minnewaska Area High School. Athletes of the week were sponsored by Pizza Ranch, Magic 107, the Pope County Tribune and Screen Prints Plus.

Sept. 15, 2003 – Plans for a new Lakeside Ballroom design were to be reviewed using input from a public meeting on the design that was held at Central Square. The concept for the new building met with some criticism, and ideas for some revamping of the design were voiced, but overall the crowd was receptive of the design.

The harvest of soybeans was starting in Pope County, and area farmers were already finding that their yields have been cut dramatically. An overly wet spring, harmful insects and near-drought conditions had combined to take their toll on plants. Soybean yields could be one-fourth to one-third less than they were last year, according to local crop experts. Corn had also taken a beating, they said, and most cobs were much smaller than usual, with fewer rows of kernels.

Sept. 2, 2013 – In just a few days, students will once again fill the classrooms of Minnewaska Area Schools. And this year, students and staff will dive into the school year with a new superintendent leading the way. Greg Schmidt officially took the helm as Minnewaska Area Schools superintendent on July 1.

Minnewaska Area High School and Minnewaska Area Elementary School staff powered through last week’s record heat, hosting open houses for students and parents on Tuesday and Wednesday. The events provided opportunities to meet teachers, find lockers, fill out paperwork, take school photos and ask questions before the school year officially kicks off Sept. 3.

The Glenwood City Commission Wednesday night finalized most of the documentation needed for a long-term agreement for the marina, which has been located near Lakeside on Lake Minnewaska. The commission did make a few changes to the agreement, including reducing the term of the agreement from three, 30-year terms to one, 30-year term.
