The Minnewaska/Morris swimming Gators won their last two meets, beating Montevideo (110-75) and Albany (97-86) in a pair of home duals, Aug. 31 and Sept. 5, respectively.

Melena Longtin had four firsts during the win over Albany, while Lyla Stadtherr, Becca Femrite and Mesa Kittelson and Soffia Stadtherr were among other Gators with multiple titles.

The Gators now head into the hart of their conference schedule with a meet at Melrose Area set for Tuesday (tomorrow), followed by a meet at home against Sauk Centre, Tuesday, Sept. 19.

Gators 110, Monte 75

The Gators earned a 110-75 victory  over Montevideo during a meet at UM-Morris, Thursday, Aug. 31.

The Gators won eight of the 12 varsity events, including two firsts by Melena Longtin in the 50 freestyle (26.35) and 100 freestyle (58.41).

“The Gators had a wonderful meet tonight,” coach Sam Oellien said.  “The Gators were victorious in both JV and varsity tonight against a strong Montevideo team.”

Becca Femrite won the 200 freestyle (2:14.44), while Clare Barnstuble earned first in the diving event (214.8 points), Mesa Kittelson won the 100 butterfly (1:10.21), Soffia Stadtherr placed first in the 100 backstroke (1:13.94) and Lyla Stadtherr earned first in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.64), in addition to Longtin’s two firsts in the freestyle events.

Also earning first was the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Longtin, Soffia Stadtherr, Femrite and Lyle Stadtherr, which was timed in 4:09.07.

“This was our first meet for the whole team, 7th-12th grade and it’s always fun to see what the new Gators can do, some with only a few weeks of practice in,” coach Oellien said. 
“We also had two new divers make their debut tonight; it is great to have new divers on the board and I was very impressed with their dives.”

Adding second-place finishes were Kittelson in the 200 freestyle (2:21.25), Isabel Guerra in the 50 freestyle (28.77), Ella Roering in diving (180.4 points), Ella Larson in the 500 freestyle (7:19.46) and three relays.

The team of Soffia and Lyla Stadtherr, Kittelson and Guerra was second in the 200 medley relay (2:12.78), the team of Kittelson, Sarah Dougherty, Sage Barnstuble and Guerra was second in the 200 freestyle relay (2:00.45), and the Gators also placed second in the 400 freestyle relay with the team of Guerra, Isabelle Emmert, Jilian Schott and Sage Barnstuble (4:32.23).

“Many of the Gators have already made section cuts for the season and we are hoping to get more every meet,” coach Oellien said.  “We have such a large team with so much talent throughout the team, so please make sure you get to the pool to watch them go.”

•  In the JV competition, the Gators won 96-58 and had a number of firsts, including the 200 yard medley relay team of Abbigail Peterson, Allie Staples, Vylet Frank and Tommie Devick (2:44.54); Isabelle Emmert in the 200 yard freestyle (2:40.12); Lorin Wilts in the 100 yard individual medley (1:31.73); Alejandra Garcia Bernabe in the 50 yard butterfly (42.34); Abbigail Peterson in the 100 freestyle (1:15.27);   Yavonne Vanhorn in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:36.69); and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Aranza Guerrero Lara, Shelby Hoberg, Alejandra Garcia Bernabe and Kendra Steffan, which was timed in 5:45.95.

Gators 97, Albany 86

The Gators edged Albany in a dual meet last Tuesday at home, winning eight of the 12 meets to edge the Huskies, 97-86.  The meet came down to the last two races as Minnewaska led 77-76 going into the final two events before winning the 100 yard breaststroke (Lyla Stadtherr) and 400 yard freestyle relay.

“The Gators had a fantastic meet last night,” coach Oellien said.  “It was back and forth all night, but the Gators were able to come out on top thanks to a pair of firsts to end the meet.  Every event was a tough battle and every Gator stepped up.”

Melena Longtin, who placed first four times during the night’s competition, had two individual firsts for the Gators, winning the 50 freestyle (26.36) and 100 freestyle (58.78), while  Becca Femrite won the 200 freestyle (2:15.39), Mesa Kittelson won the 100 butterfly (1:10.92), Lyla Stadtherr won the 100 breaststroke (1:15.81) and Clare Barnstuble earned first in the diving competition with a score of 204.2 points.

Also earning firsts were the 200 freestyle relay team of Lyla Stadtherr, Isabel Guerra, Femrite and Longtin (1:51.92), and the 400 freestyle team of Sage Barnstuble, Lyla Stadtherr, Femrite and Longtin (4:10.23).

•  The Gators also won the JV contest against Albany, 104-49, winning numerous races.

Placing first for the JV team were:  the 200 yard medley relay team of Grace Zenk, Yavonne Vanhorn, Tommi Devick and Allie Staples (2:40.31); Isabelle Emmert in the 200 yard freestyle (2:47.41); Sophie Recker in the 50 freestyle (35.79); Adelyn Ferrian in diving (92.3 points); Alejandra Garcia Bernabe in the 50 yard butterfly (41.98); Berdine Kleindl in the 100 freestyle (1:13.62); the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Shelby Hoberg, Maria Heidelberger, Devick and Lorin Wilts (2:25.22); Yavonne Vanhorn in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:34.3); and the 400 yard freestyle relay team of Wilts, Kendra Steffan, Heidelberger and Vylet Frank (5:31.34).
