From Sept. 12, 1913

Carl Gulbrandson, the little 18-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Knut Gulbrandson died last Thursday of summer cholera. Funeral services were held at East Zion Lutheran Church Monday. 

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Emil Erickson, a 10 lb. boy. Pass the cigars, Emil.

August Bredvold and Anna Lia were married recently at West Zion Lutheran Church.

Christie Hogy and Henry Pederson were married Wednesday night at the New Prairie Church. They will make their home on the groom’s farm in Nora. 

100 YEARS AGO

From Sept. 7, 1923

The interior of the Minnewaska Hospital has been redecorated, the work being done by Karl Kjolsbeck. The halls are decorated in gray, mottled with blue and rose. The private rooms are in the green and the operating room is green and white. 

The mimer’s Y. P. S. will meet at John Dyrstads next Sunday and the following program will be given: Reading, Alma Dahl; vocal solo, Nora Romsos; talk, Olivia Peterson; reading, Johnnie Lee. 

Miss Gina Dyrstad, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dyrstad of Minnewaska and Oscar Thompson, son of Mr. Alfred Smedstad were united in marriage at the home of the bride’s parents on Tuesday evening. Little Gladys Gorder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Gorder was flower girl. There were no other attendants.

Harriet Kirkwold, Bernice Jorgenson and Bertha Anderson left on Monday for St. Cloud to attend the State Teacher’s College there. 

Peter Einarson purchased the old tailor shop building from the Minnewaska Oil Co. He expects to move it onto his lot in the northeast part of town. 

Alma K. Tollefson began a seven month term of English school in the Lien Schoolhouse, Dist. 83, on Tuesday.

90 YEARS AGO

From Sept. 14, 1933

Prohibition lost out in Minnesota on Tuesday as it has in 28 other states in the union. Pope County, however, did not follow suit with the state, and with most of the precincts heard from, the votes favor the dry side by a large majority. Swift, Douglas and Grant counties also voted dry. In Starbuck the vote was 63 for repeal and 203 against. 

Through the quick work of Chester Pederson and Marshal S. C. Sorenson the plans of a car thief failed to work out Tuesday night, and as a result Knute Hidem still has his Whippet automobile. Chester, who rooms at Hidem’s was just coming home from the county fair when he saw Hidem’s car back out of the garage, without lights, and drive north. He notified Marshal Sorenson and they took chase and overtook the car going east by Otto Olsons. The thief escaped in the dark but they have a good description of him, so chances are he will be caught before long. 

Funeral services for Mrs. Fred Knutson were held at East Zion Monday, Rev. K.R. Palmer officiating. Mrs. Knutson is survived by her husband and three children, Ardis 6, Harold 4, and baby Phyllis. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Hilda Hagen and the following brothers and sisters: Melvin Gilbert, Mable, John, Lillian and Florence.

From Sept. 9, 1943

Miss Lillian Scheflo, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Scheflo of Glenwood and Joseph Klepac of Minneapolis were married Saturday evening at the Minnewaska Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in Minneapolis.

News flashed over the radio Wednesday morning announcing that Italy had surrendered at 5:30 Wednesday. It was broadcasted that the papers had been signed five days but had been withheld from the public for the safety of the Italians against the ally, the Germans.  

Delores Helen, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Johnshoy was baptized Sunday at the Immanuel Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brevig, Clara Reisrud and Donald Amundson. 

On July 29, Mr. and Mrs. Ferdinand Opheim of Cyrus received a telegram from the War Department stating their son, M.S. Ralph Opheim, had been missing in action since July 17. After nearly a month of anxious waiting and hoping, they received the second message Thursday, August 26th saying he had met death in action in China July 17. Full particulars are being written the family from Washington concerning his death, but to date the letter has not arrived. 

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Knutson at the Benson Hospital August 30.

Miss Janet Quitney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Quitney of Lowry and S/Sgt. Edward Taft of Quantico, Virginia, were married August 27 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lowry. The bride is a teacher at Wayzata Elementary School and the groom is presently stationed in Quantico.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pederson entertained relatives and friends to dinner Sunday in honor of Rollie’s first birthday.  

Miss JoAnne Jackson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Art C. Jackson of Starbuck and Hans Peterson of Glenwood were married at Barsness Lutheran Church August 29. The couple will make their home in St. Paul. 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Benhard (Caroline) Mickelson, 64, were held at Fron Lutheran Church August 15. She is survived by her husband; one foster son, Henry Foss and her mother, Mrs. Sigrid Boe.

657 students have enrolled in the Starbuck Public Schools, with 324 students in the elementary and 333 in grades 6-12.

Mr. and Mrs. Orrin Erickson are the parents of a baby girl, Linda Kay, born Saturday, August 31. 

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. David Schuett of Lowry August 21.

A daughter, Janice Allene, was born to Mr. and Mrs. August Grothe (Joan Vinge) August 19.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Bartz August 23.

President Kennedy has ordered a halt to the drafting of married men so long as enough single men are available to maintain the strength of the Armed Forces.

Mrs. Robert Ophaug has been selected as “Outstanding Young Women of America for 1973” according to Mrs. Pandora Bemis, director for this national awards program. She was nominated by the Alumae Association of the University of Minnesota, Morris. 

Several tornadoes were sighted late Friday afternoon in Chippewa, Swift, Pope and Douglas counties. Damage was reported on three farms and to some utility poles. 

According to the Southwest Minnesota District News, Rev. Norman Olsen, who was formerly Pastor of Cyrus Lutheran and Nora Congregations and has since been at Benson and Glencoe, will be installed as Senior Pastor at Luverne, effective Sept. 4th.

Irving H. Helgeson, zone manager in Otter Tail County for 16 years for Investors Diversified Service, will retire Sept. 29, Donald H. Housch, Fargo, Divisional Sales manager has announced.

From Sept. 7, 1983

Births: a daughter, Katie Ann to Diane (Blocher) and Ed Koloski of Kensington August 24; a son, Adam Lee to Wendy (Wold) and Dan Bertrum of Norcross June 15; a son, Nathan Daniel to Carrie (Wold) and Mike Pilgram of Annandale August 23. 

Funeral services for Ruth Beckstrom, 77, were held at the First Lutheran Church of Morris August 27. She is survived by two daughters.

Captain John Lahr’s final hop (flight) of his naval career was celebrated with champagne and a huge cake just before his retirement July 1. During his naval career, he made over 1,000 career landings and flew over 300 missions during the Vietnam Conflict. He was actively involved in flying during his 29 years Naval career. Lahr’s wife is the former Janice Larson of Starbuck.

The Starbuck Stars lost to Hermantown 4-2 at Arlington Saturday. The Stars ended the season with a 14-15 record.

A stainless steel time capsule, made by Julius and Jeff Aaberg was placed in a vault and buried in the Starbuck Lakeshore Park Monday evening, Items included in the capsule were a 1983 Chippewan, articles from the Centennial book, a letter from Agnes Brenden, a copy of the Starbuck Tines Centennial edition, plus special items from the Minnewaska Lutheran Home, Minnewaska District Hospital and Fron and Minnewaska Lutheran Churches.

Funeral services for Joseph Hoium, 87, of Glenwood were held August 28 at Solem Lutheran Church of Kensington. He is survived by his wife, Myrtle; two daughters, Delores Strommen of Glenwood and Gerdes Zimmerman of Delano; and a son, Melvin Hoium of Glenwood.

Bill and Sherry Rutledge of Bemidji are the parents of a son, Cody Stinson born August 24.

Stacy Jeitz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Gregersen and Mike Jeitz of Starbuck and Richard T. Guggisberg, son of Tom and Kay Guggisberg of Starbuck were married April 17 at Fron Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in Sauk Centre.

The Pope County Board of Commissioners held a special meeting on Aug. 29 in order to finalize its 2004 preliminary budget. That number comes with the maximum levy limit of $3,730,367 and special levies at $533,006, bringing the total levy to $4,263,373, a 6.5 percent increase when compared with 2003.

Excitement filled the air as Starbuck Elementary students prepared to return to school. An open house was held on Aug. 27 where students were able to meet their teachers, drop off their supplies, purchase handbooks and find their lockers and classrooms. 

She started selling magazines and greeting cards door to door as a child and has never looked back. Now, 91-year-old Cora Stoen is going into her 37th year as an Avon sales associate.

The Lowry City Council approved their budget for 2014 at its Sept. 3 meeting. The tax levy the council approved was for $101,500 which is a one and a half percent increase from the $100,000 the city levied in 2013.

The Pope County HRA/EDA Board met for just over an hour on Sept. 5. Executive Director Dick Dreher said that Stephanie Howe of Studio E Architects in Glenwood will be at the Sept. 18 meeting to show the board what she has been drawing up as a plan for the potential development of the west side of Lake Minnewaska. 

There will be some new faces at Glacial Hills Elementary this year. New kindergarten teacher Elizabeth Kriesel and new physical education teacher Bill Guck were added to the staff at GHES.
