From Sept. 19, 1913

Nicolay Johnson has sold his restaurant business to Peter J. Berg Monday. Mr. Berg has just returned from Norway where he had gone over a year ago with his wife, intending to make their home there but after a year in Norway, they decided to return to the USA. Mr. Berg has been looking for an opening here and last week he noticed the Johnson restaurant advertised for sale. He decided to buy the business in the best little town in the world. 

Invitations are out announcing the marriage f Carl Berg to Mable Samuelson on Sunday, Sept. 21. 

Bennie Griebenow is the proud owner of a twenty-five dollar repeating shot gun. Bennie just expects to see the game come his way now. 

We certainly appreciate the chilly weather as it puts millions of flies and mosquitoes out of commission.

100 YEARS AGO

From Sept. 14, 1923

Cora Barsness, Borghild and Sophie Otteson left last Monday for Fergus Falls where they will resume their studies at the Park Region College. 

Miss Lillian Gorder  left for Waterloo, Wis., last Saturday where she will be employed in the advertising department of the newspaper there. 

Skriver Pederson left Monday for Northfield where he will resume his studies at St.Olaf College. 

Divorce and marriage statistics of eight states, including Minnesota, shows an increase of 3,060 divorces granted, and a decrease of 10,570 marriages as compared with 1916. This report discloses a different to solve. The only remedy imaginable involves a re-vamping of human nature, a different civilization.

A fine program was rendered at the Y.P.S. of the East Zion Church which was held at Olaus Dokkens Sunday afternoon. Miss Thelma Tollefson gave a reading, Rev. Gilman Lien gave a speech, and there were several vocal and instrumental duets by Noel Johnson and Christ Westby, accompanied by Miss Mable Johnson on the organ. 

90 YEARS AGO

From Sept. 14, 1933

Pope County closed another successful fair on Wednesday evening, and according to reports was larger in attendance than for a number of years. 6,000 people attended on Wednesday. Lucille Barsness, 13, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eilert Barsness won first prize. Johnshoy, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Johnshoy was awarded first prize for the best breeding pen of Poultry. Howard Hagen won second on a fat turkey pen and Norman Edmunds first on a breeding pen of ducks. Reno Township won out over White Bear Lake for the best township booth. 

Starbuck will invade the Glenwood gridiron Friday evening for the first game of the season, according to Coach Engebretson. 

Funeral services for Andrew J. Rustad were held at West Zion Lutheran Church on Saturday, Sept. 2, Rev. K.R. Palmer officiating. He is survived by three sons and four daughters: Julius of Clomarf, Mrs. Gust (Dena) Landmark of Hancock, Mrs. Ray (Anna) Sulier of Benson, Gerhard, Leonard and Bena, Living at home , and Mrs. Elon (Bertha) Tyler of Cyrus.

From Sept. 16, 1943

Adeline E. Aslakson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Aslakson of Starbuck and Marvin Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin O. Nelson of Cyrus were married at West Zion Church Sunday evening. The couple will make their home on the Nelson farm near Cyrus. 

A boy, Marshall Aldien, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jackson on Saturday, Sept. 11 at the Minnewaska Hospital.

On Wednesday, Sept. 8, Loretta Hustad, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tegner Hustad, celebrated her first birthday.

The Starbuck Commercial Club have set up 65 bottles with placards, “Send Cigarettes to Your Fighting Men” at all business places in Starbuck. The manufacturers will furnish the cigarettes at 5¢ per package, so every time you drop a nickel in the bottle, some service man will get a package of cigarettes and on the package of cigarettes and on the package will be printed “Compliments of Starbuck Commercial Club.”

Miss Lillian Friedman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Friedman and Clifford Nordland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nordland were married at the Lake Emily Mission church Sept. 12. The couple will make their home in Minneapolis. 

The Starbuck Public School opened Monday morning with 255 pupils are enrolled in grades one through six, and 155 in grades seven through twelve.

From Sept. 17, 1953

Arlen Carlson, a member of the Jolly Go-Getters 4-H Club won a trip to Itasca State Park from Sept. 17-20. Every year one outstanding 4-H member in the county enrolled in the conversation, win a trip to the camp. 

Pupils enrolled in the drivers training course at the Starbuck Schools are: John Giesen, Toni Giesen, Norma Showalter, Noreen Ophaug, Ann Olson, Helen Larson, Sharon Gullickson, Yvonne Jackson, Lee Walters, Joyce Walters, Geraline Thompson, Beverly Olson, Karen Flack, Ann Thorstad, Loretta Gorder, David Tollefson, Orlin Swensrud, Dorraine Maanum, Sharon Pederson, Luanne Peterson, LuVern Suckow, Colleen Opdahl, Janice Johnshoy, Gail Smedstad and Sonja Smedstad. Harold Hugo is the instructor. 

Linden John, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Junior Maanum was baptized at West Zion Lutheran Church Sunday. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Milo Gorder and Mr. and Mrs. Randall Maanum.

A daughter, Mara Elizabeth was born to T/Sgt. and Mrs. Casper Johnshoy at Ft. Walon Beach, Florida, August 26. 

Funeral services for Tollef Syverson, 74, were held at West Zion Lutheran Church Sept. 1. He is survived by his wife, Marit; three children, Maurice and Mrs. J.C. (Alice) Bilodeau of Minneapolis and Mrs. Glenwmore (Theresa) Larson of Hancock. 

Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schwendemann, Jr. had their infant son, Jon William, baptized Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Esten Foss of Fergus Falls and Mr. and Mrs. W. Schwendemann.

Two young people were confirmed at St. Pauli Parish August 25. They were Ronald Knutson and Glen Strand. Confirmed at Rolling Forks Lutheran Church Sept. 8 were Larry Anderson, Diane Devick, James Devick, Linda Ellingson, Roger Erdahl, Robert Erdman, Joyce Fread, Dennis Heidebrink, Marlys Klyve, Darlene Lagred, Larry Nelson, Robert Olson, Ruth Olson, David Pederson, Nadine Rodahl, Gary Svor, Lois Syverson and Mona Syverson.

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Urke are the proud parents of a son, Mark Owen, born September 2.

Births: A son to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Martinson of Alexandria Sept. 5; a daughter, Kim Marie, to Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Moen (Gloria Barsness) of Minneapolis Sept. 4. 

Christine Marie, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Forde was baptized Sunday, Sept. 8 at Indherred Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Eric Carlson of Decorah, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. Euene Wallman of Hopkins. 

Mr. and Mrs. George Lundebrek are the parents of a daughter, Cynthia Kaye, born August 28.

From Sept. 13, 1973

The Bloodmobile paid their visit to Starbuck Friday and came up with a very light turn-out. Only 59 persons appeared with 55 pints of blood collected and four were deferred. Seven came for the first time while two specified where their blood should be used. 

The Starbuck Creamery Company has been purchased the Anderson Hatchery and Feed Company in Glenwood and will take possession on Oct. 1. 

The Board of Pope County Commissioners at their last regular meeting Sept. 5, approved a resolution supporting a new modern hospital for the county in a central location. 

40 YEARS AGO

From Sept. 14, 1983

Fron Lutheran Church has made many improvements the past year including a ramp for the handicapped. An elevator is also being installed.

David W. Baukol and Fred J. Bucher of Starbuck graduated Aug. 19 from St. Cloud State University. Baukol received a Master of Science degree and is now the Assistant Principal at Little Falls, and Bucher graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing. 

Janet Luettjohann of Crookston and Philip Bartz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Bartz of Starbuck were married July 9 at Crookston, where the couple will make their home. 

Scott Johnshoy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Johnshoy has been selected as a member of the Willmar Community College football team at the wide receiver position. Johnshoy is a freshman at WCC. 

Cheryl Tollefson, 13, daughter of Roger and Loretta Tollefson and a member of the Langhei Aces 4-H Club, exhibited the Reserve Class Ten Steer, a chiangus crossbred in the 1,300 to 1,320 lb. class in the heavyweight division of the 1983 Minnesota State Fair 4-H Beef Show Sept. 3.

The Bethany Lutheran Church members are looking for a new location for their church where it can be preserved. The church is 116 years old and has a current membership of 8.

Funeral services for Gladys Ronnie, 74, were held at Immanuel Lutheran Church Sept. 14. She is survived by her husband, Arnold; and two daughters, Cheryl Nousaine and Ardis Gillund. 

Roxanne Kay Spore, daughter of Jim and Caren Spore of Starbuck graduated from St. Cloud State College with a Bachelor of Arts degree Aug. 20. 

We wish to announce that Chris Sutton has accepted the responsibility of managing the Starbuck Laundromat beginning Oct. 2. ~Jim and Alberta Johnson, Starbuck.

Rebecca Worner left her dream job at the call of God. Worner stepped in this month as the new pastor at East and West Zion Churches.

Farmers have been battling with a significant lack of rain this season and losses could be substantial. The Starbuck area hasn’t seen a notable amount of rain since July 4, which makes this the driest season in years. 

After months of agonizing over the storm sewer improvement project, the city council’s problems seemed to not be over. Bids were opened on Sept. 4 and came in higher than expected. 

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced details of the Sugar Beet Disaster Program authorizing $60 million to producers who have suffered weather-related losses of 35 percent or more in either of the past two crop years.

From Sept. 18, 2013

The Starbuck City Council approved a preliminary levy of $588,178 which is the same as last year. Steve Mattson was at the meeting to discuss bonding for the 5th and Wollan Street Project. Mattson said since the last meeting he was at a couple months ago that interest rates have went straight up. Was able to get deals done with four percent interest and five year call period which can be refinanced in a few years if interests rates change. The bond is a 15 year bond. 

Three area counties are among those set to receive portions of a $4.7 million storm-relief package approved during a one-day special legislative session Monday. 

Minnewaska Area High School swimmer Lacey Entzi broke the school record in the 500 Free on Sept. 12.
