The Minnewaska Area girls tennis team won two more WCC matches last week to move into sole possession of first place in the WCC.  The Lakers beat Montevideo last Tuesday night at home, 5-2, and then swept LQP-DB in another home match Thursday, 7-0.

Minnewaska is now 4-0 in the conference and 6-3 overall heading into this week’s three scheduled matches.  The Lakers were set to host Osakis, Monday (today) and YME, Tuesday (tomorrow) before traveling to MACCRAY, Thursday.

The Lakers were also set to play at the Pine City quadrangular, Saturday, but results of that contest will be highlighted next week.  Eight of the players on the Lakers’ team have at least five wins and are above .500 — Addy Heid (10-2), Alia Randt (8-4), Katie Sorenson (8-4), Megan Thorfinnson (8-4), Katy Vold (8-4), Rachel Rankin (8-4), Olivia Danielson (7-5) and Avarie Uhde (7-5).

Waska 5, Montevideo 2

The Lakers ran their conference record to 3-0 with a 5-2 victory over Montevideo last Tuesday at home.

Minnewaska Area lost at first singles in a three-setter, but the Lakers did pick up three points in singles as Megan Thorfinnson won at second singles (6-2, 6-0), Rachel Rankin earned a 6-0, 7-5 victory at third singles and Addy Heid gave up just one game in winning 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles.

Minnewaska also won two points in doubles as Avarie Uhde and Olivia Danielson won 6-2, 6-3 at first doubles and Katy Vold and Katie Sorenson won easily at second doubles (6-2, 6-1).

Waska 7, LQP-DB 0

The Lakers swept a match from LQP-DB, Thursday night at home, 7-0.  The match had been set to be played on the road, but was moved to Minnewaska Area High School at the last minute.  

In all, the Minnewaska Area gave up just 22 total games, including nine in the four singles’ matches.

Alia Randt (6-1, 6-1), Megan Thorfinnson (6-0, 6-0) and Rachel Rankin (6-1, 6-0) routed their opponents at first through third singles, respectively, while Addy Heid also won at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-4.

The three doubles’ matches were a little closer as Avarie Uhde and Olivia Danielson won at first doubles (6-4, 6-2), Katy Vold and Katie Sorenson earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at second doubles, and Kaylen Blair and Norah VanZee teamed up for a 6-2, 6-0 victory at third doubles for VanZee’s first career varsity win.
