The Lakers are 5-3 overall after a busy week of matches.  The Lakers swept Benson in the opener, but then fell in five games to BOLD, Aug. 31.  

In matches last week, the Lakers swept Montevideo last Tuesday, 3-0, before losing in three games at home to West Central Area, Thursday, 3-0.  The week ended with a 3-1 record at the Lakeview Tourney, Saturday, where the Lakers placed third.

This week, the Lakers were set to host Melrose Area, Tuesday (tomorrow) before getting ready to play at Sauk Centre, Thursday.

BOLD 3, Minnewaska 2

The Lakers lost a heartbreaker at BOLD, Thursday, Aug. 31, losing the final two games by two points to lose in five games, 23-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 16-14.

Dacia Fleury and Dreya Barsness combined for 27 kills, but it still wasn’t enough as BOLD showed why they are one of the WCC favorites this fall.

The Lakers served at a 91 percent clip with 10 aces.  Barsness was 15-for-17 with three aces, while Haillie Schulz was 15-for-16 with an ace, Emma Poegel was 12-for-13 with two aces and Brooklyn Noyes was 9-for-9 with an ace.

Fleury hammered down 16 kills and also had a block, while Barsness added 11 kills and a block.  Other offensive weapons for the Lakers included Avery Fier with seven kills and a 19 percent kill percentage and Schulz with five kills.

Barsness also led the defense with 16 digs, followed by Haley Shea with 14 and Schulz and Fier with eight digs each, while Emma Hellermann led the Lakers with three blocks and Shea and Schulz were the leaders in set assists with 19 and 11, respectively.

Minnewaska 3, Monte 0

The Lakers earned a three-game sweep over Montevideo last Tuesday night at home, giving up just 33 total points to the Thunderhawks.

Dreya Barsness had 14 kills, while Avery Fier had another great all-around match with eight kills, four set assists and five digs to lead the Lakers to the 25-13, 25-8, 25-12 whitewash.

The Lakers had a 35 percent kill percentage, led by Barsness’ 48 percent, Fier’s 28 percent and 29 percent by Haillie Schulz, who had five kills with only one error.

With those three pounding down the volleyball on the other side of the net, Minnewaska Area had little problem in avenging its most-recent loss, a five-game setback at BOLD five nights earlier.

The Lakers were 86 percent serving for the night with 13 aces.  Brooklyn Meyer had a fantastic night at the service line, going 18-for-19 with four aces, while Barsness was 10-for-12 with four aces, Emma Poegel was 9-for-10 with two aces, Schulz was 8-for-9 with an ace and Haley Shea added two ace-serves along with her team-high 17 set assists.

Defense was a team effort for the Lakers as Fier, Poegel and Shea all had five digs to lead the team, followed by Barsness and Schulz with four digs each.  Miaya Guggisberg chipped in with a kill and team-high two blocks, while Emma Hellermann had 1.5 blocks and Fier had one along with an error-free night passing on 10 attempts.

WCA 3, Minnewaska 0

The Lakers were swept by the Knights, Thursday night at Minnewaska Area High School, 25-20, 25-20, 25-19.  Serving was among the only bright spots as the Lakers served at a 97 percent clip, going 57-for-59 with seven aces.

Leading the way at the service line were Dreya Barsness (12-for-12 with three aces), Emma Poegel (11-11-1), Avery Fier (10-10-2) and Haley Shea (7-7-1).

The attack game was another matter as the Lakers had 27 kills along with 23 errors.  Barsness led her team with 12 kills, while Fier added seven and Haillie Schulz put down six.

Shea also led the Lakers with 12 set assists; Poegel (21), Fier (16) and Schulz (15) were the team leaders in digs; and Miaya Guggisberg had a team-high two blocks with Addy Kath adding 1.5.

at Lakeview Tourney

The Lakers went 3-1 at the Lakeview Tourney, beating ACGC (23-25, 25-15), Lakeview (25-14, 25-17) and Morris (25-21, 25-8), while also losing to Westbrook-WG (25-23, 20-25).

During the opening win over ACGC, Avery Fier had 11 kills and a block, while Brooklyn Meyer was 10-for-10 serving with two aces and Haley Shea had 11 set assists.  Against Lakeview, Dreya Barsness had 10 kills, while Shea was 12-for-12 serving with two aces and had 16 set assists

Barsness had seven kills and Schulz six against WWG, while Shea had more 12 set assists, Fier and Barsness both had nine digs and the Lakers made just 82 percent of their serves.

The Lakers ended the tourney with a win over Morris in the third-place match as Barsness had 10 kills, Shea was 12-for-12 serving with two aces and Poegel had 14 digs to give her 42 for the tourney.
