Mallards captured Little Eight Conference title

Oct. 31, 1963 – Glenwood area resort operators voted to form an organization which would assist them in their efforts to bring tourist dollars to the area. Twelve resorts were represented at the meeting. Temporary chair of the group was Russ Torfin of Torfin’s Resort on Lake Amelia. 

Pope County’s first hunting mishap in several years occurred when a Crystal man lost his life while duck hunting with two others on Grove Lake. The man was killed when one of his companions in the rear of the boat dropped his loaded gun. 

Six county 4-Hers earned top Key Awards during the annual county banquet. They were Grace Knutson of the Lakeview club, Janet Olson of Midway, Karolyn Lee and Kathryn Lee of the Pleasant Hill Troopers, Donna Gaffaney of the Villard Livewires and Corliss Pederson of the Wayside club. Adult leader awards went to Mr. and Mrs. Adlore Forbord, Stanley Wiger and Mrs. William Lofquist. 

Nov. 1, 1973 – Voters from four county villages were to head to the polls for their elections. In Long Beach, Charles Rybak and Norman Howard were trying for the position of mayor. In Villard, Mayor Ian Harmon was stepping down while Joe Groninga sought to replace him. In Lowry, Leo Dahl, who had served on the village council for 25 years and as mayor for the past five year, was hanging up the gavel. Glen Lundblad had filed for the position. In Starbuck, Mayor Gene Watnaas had filed for re-election and was unopposed. 

A deer on the road caused a two-car crash on Hwy 28. Three people were injured in the mishap. The deer was killed.

A group of Villard women had decided the previous spring that the town’s park needed work. Dubbing themselves the Villard Improvement Committee, they began efforts to raise funds for such a project as well as putting in physical labor themselves. Pictured in the Tribune at work on some effort or other were Margaret Randt, Rita Rajdl, Wanda Robideaux, Charlene Nelson and Phyllis Neros. 

Oct. 27, 1983 – The Pope County Nursing Service was featured in the Tribune. County Nurse Elayne Schluter explained to readers the services offered, including those to infants and children and to the elderly. A wide range of services and efforts was available through the nursing service. 

The Villard Mallards captured the Little Eight Conference title for the second time. Among those participating in volleyball at Villard were Kim Novak, Karen Jellison, Deann Ferguson, Jill Schnetzer, Lynn Daniels, Shari Massmann, Pat Rode and Ginene Reichmann along with coach Jan Kapaun. 

The Starbuck football team defeated Graceville 37-6 to up their season accounting to 8-0. Buck coach Bill Bailey praised his team for playing well under difficult field conditions. 

Nov. 1, 1993 – The Armful of Love program was working to make it a happy holiday season for needy families. Many area churches, organizations and individuals had joined together the previous year through the program to help families in the county. Over 120 families, which included 300 adults and children, were served through the program. Each family received food baskets and gifts to help make the holiday season merrier. 

The Minnewaska Lakers’ volleyball team had completed their final conference match with a win and opened the subsection playoffs with a 3-0 victory over Brandon-Evansville. The win in the subsection playoffs meant the Lakers would play again at Minnewaska Area High School against Eagle Valley. 

The Students of the Week at E.N. Nordgaard Elementary School were Desiree Gunderson, second grade, the daughter of Wayne and Sheila Gunderson; Krystal May, fourth grade, the daughter of Aron and Margie May; and Amanda Douvier, sixth grade, the daughter of DuWayne and Alice Douvier. The students’ names were drawn from rainbow slips awarded to students for displaying good citizenship. For their efforts, the students received a T-shirt and certificate.

Nov. 3, 2003 – The Glenwood City Commission expected to meet and award a contract for the construction of a new Lakeside Ballroom. That never happened because the bids that came in for the project were so high that the commission decided to re-evaluate the building design and look into other options for rebuilding the facility.  

Adequate yields and higher prices added up to a pretty year for Pope County corn growers. Average corn yields of 140 bushels an acre were much better than expected, especially following a summer that was too wet early on and too dry later in the season. 

Oct. 28, 2013 – Glenwood City Commissioners decided by consensus last Wednesday to delay a decision on spending city funds on an engineering study that could help determine the feasibility of an inland marina. 

Glenwood City Commissioners delayed action on a request from the Glenwood Fire Department Relief Association for a retirement compensation increase. City Administrator Dave Iverson first stated that the timing of the request was wrong, since the 2014 city levy and budget had been set, even though it will not be finalized until December. 

Kruger Farms of Starbuck was honored last Wednesday as the recipient of the annual award presented during the Pope County Salute to Business and Industry Luncheon at the Minnewaska House.
