Residents of Minnewaska Area School (MAS) District will decide on a technology levy initiative that is part of a special election on November 7.

District residents will have the opportunity to vote on the levy and play a key role in determining the future of technology at MAS, according to the school district.

In-person voting will take place in the Minnewaska Area High School Auditorium from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. on  Tuesday, November 7. Those voting on Nov. 7 should enter the school through the District Office doors (Door #1).

Residents can also vote Absentee which started on Sept. 22 and continues through Nov. 6 at the Minnewaska Area Schools District Office.  The office is open from  7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Absentee voting will take place at the Minnewaska Area Schools District Office inside the high school (Door #1). (Absentee voting will be unavailable on Friday, Nov. 3.)

The tech levy that will be voted on is a proposed renewal or renewal and increase of the levy that was passed by voters in 2014.  As the dedicated source of funding for MAS technology solutions for the next decade, the tech levy represents a critical investment for MAS students and staff.

If approved to be renewed, the tech levy would continue to provide MAS with $350,000 annually over the next 10 years. If approved for renewal plus increase, this would provide the renewal amount plus an additional $500,000 annually over the next 10 years. This level of funding would enable the district to purchase, upgrade and support a wide range of technology over the next decade, ensuring that students have the tools necessary for success in our increasingly digital world.

“We’re excited about the potential renewal or renewal and increase of the tech levy and how it’ll help us keep up our commitment to technology for our students,” said Chip Rankin, Superintendent of Minnewaska Area Schools. “The funds from the levy will help us maintain a 1:1 device-to-student ratio, update outdated tech in our classrooms, introduce new career-readiness initiatives and set a solid foundation for future students.”

If the tech levy is approved for renewal and increase, a family living in a $200,000 home would pay an estimated $32 per year in new tax dollars towards the levy. With these potential funds, MAS students would benefit from a wide variety of upgraded and new technology over the next 10 years. Some examples include student subscriptions to learning and curriculum platforms, devices for at-home and remote learning, 3D pens, precision manufacturing tools, STEAM learning resources, precision agriculture and drone technology, and more.

“In today’s world, technology is an integral part of education,” said Rankin. “The tech levy ensures that children will have access to the necessary tools without families having to bear the full financial burden. It’s a relatively small investment that can have a tremendous effect on our students and their future.”

The 2014 tech levy has made a significant impact on MAS, supporting the expansion and update of student computing devices, the implementation of smart TV systems in classrooms, the upgrade of the point-of-sale system for Food & Nutrition Services, the modernization of instructional presentation systems and much more. It also facilitated professional development for staff and central office staffing associated with supporting technology projects.

Voting day for the tech levy is Tuesday, November 7, 2023. In-person voting will take place in the Minnewaska High School auditorium from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more information about the tech levy, visit minnewaska.k12.mn.us/vote.
