110 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 10, 1913

The farmers in the community have a lot of apples this year that they cannot dispose of. This is the first year that there has been such a condition in their neighborhood as apples have not been raised here extensively before. P. P. Klevann of Starbuck, is suggesting the building here of a cider press and a canning factory. Such would furnish a market for the apples in the neighborhood. It would also furnish employment to more people. Here is hoping that Mr. Klevann will push his plan. 

Just as we are about to go to press, we learned more important news. A new land company has been formed with headquarters in Starbuck. The firm name will be the E.P. Lindgren Land Co. Owning to getting the good news just before going to press, we are unable to at this time give a more extended writeup. 

School report for district 41 for month ending October 3: Total number enrolled of 12. Students receiving perfect attendance certificates were George and Hazel Dahlquist, Ada Nygaard, Jennie Erickson, Helen, Evelyn and Verna Erickson, Agnes Anderson, Esther and Pearly Urness and William Nygaard. Bessie Christenson, teacher.

100 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 5, 1923

An athletic association has been formed in the local high school and the boys are planning on going in for football this season. In order to raise the necessary funds to buy their equipment they plan to have a “tag day” next Saturday.

Miss Clara Knudson, who for the past year has been superintendent of the Minnewaska Hospital, was married last week to Mr. G.W. Hart of Watertown, South Dakota. Miss Lillian Wrolson of Belgrade is now acting superintendent of the hospital. 

Mayor Geo. Arneson has decided to stucco the drug store building this fall. Walt Waldron of Montevideo will do the work. 

An eleven pound baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ole Jorgenson of Rolling Forks Friday morning. 

A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Hans Aaberg on Tuesday. 

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ronnie of Greenland last week. 

Odell Smedstad, Palmer Olmeim and Raymond Rosby will attend business college in St. Cloud this year. 

Olaus Lien, 22 year old son of Ole Lien of Walden, was badly injured last Tuesday afternoon when his hand caught in the blower of a corn shredder.

Frederick Jellum won five prizes on five entries with his Rose Comb Rhode Island Red Chickens at the county fair last week. Oliver Rosby, with his white single comb Orpingtons won three prizes, two firsts and one second. 

90 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 5, 1933

L.C. Berg, veteran mail carrier on the old route 2 and new route 1 out of Starbuck, made his last trip for Uncle Sam on Saturday, and will now retire on a pension. His route has been taken over by Frank Mather of Farwell. 

Knute Johnson of Terrace has purchased the blacksmith equipment formerly owned by Arne Swenson and opened the shop here this week. Mr. Johnson has operated a shop in Terrace for about four years in partnership with his son, Arthur, who will stay on in Terrace.

Thieves broke into the schoolhouse three miles south of Starbuck and carried off a quantity of coal and wood which had just recently been hauled there. This is the eighth time the lock has been broken and someone has entered the schoolhouse. 

Miss Evelyn Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Nelson of Langhei and Selmer Nyhusmoen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Olav Nyhusmoen also of Langhei were married at the West Zion parsonage on Sept. 23. Rev. K.R. Palmer officiating. Their attendants were Alma Nelson and Gerhard Nyhusmoen. 

Clinton Julius Berg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claus Bergof Minneapolis, was buried in the Immanuel Cemetery last Sunday. He contracted polio and passed away Sept. 30. He was five years and nine months at the time of his death. 

Miss Myrtle Runquist, cook at the Minnewaska hospital, suffered a painful injury Sunday when she spilled a can of boiling coffee over her face and shoulder. The accident happened at her home south of Starbuck. 

80 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 7, 1943

Miss LaVonne Staack, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Staack of Langhei Township, and Loren Lund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Lund of Langhei were married at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson Oct. 3. The couple will make their home on the farm of the groom’s father in Langhei Township. 

Levine Tollefson’s combination garage and store was burned to the ground Monday noon when sparks from the welding machine operated by Mr. Tollefson dropped through the plank floor, ignited the fumes coming from a flooded fuel oil furnace caused an explosion which enveloped in the whole interior in flames in a short time. 

Action taken recently by 12 Federal Land Banks will substitute a four percent interest rate for higher rates on 98 percent of the loans made by the land banks prior to June 24, 1935. “The Land Banks” four percent rate is the lowest at which farmers generally ever have been able to obtain long-term mortgage credit.

70 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 8, 1953

Funeral services for Edgar P. Wedum, prominent and respected lumberman were held Friday afternoon at the Glenwood Congregational Church. He is survived by his wife and two sons, George, a student at the University of Minnesota and David, 8.

Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Aaberg of Minneapolis had their infant son, Ronald Bruce, baptized Sunday at Fron Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Moe of Willmar, Frances and Leland Larson.

Miss Audrey Fae Hagen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milo Hagen of Starbuck and George L. Crust of Brainerd were married Sept. 5 at Minnewaska Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in St. Paul. 

A deal was made last week whereby Oliver Gloege of Glenwood became the owner of Henry Nodland’s residence in Starbuck and possession will be given Nov. 1. The Nodlands will be moving into their new home at Kensington, MN. 

60 YEARS AGO

Twenty young people were confirmed at Fron Lutheran Church Sunday. They were Richard John Anderson, Victoria Renee Behl, Barbara Jane Berg, Carol Ann Berg, Jane Terese Brenden, William John Dahlseng, Richard Lyle Disrud, Teddy James Erickson, Sandra Ann Espelien, David Lee Gregersen, Joyce Ann Hustad, Pamela Ann Landaas, Dennis Craig Landmark Gregory Earl Landmark, Lee Russell Peterson, JoAnn Rundgren, Rebecca Louise Steen, Vicki Lynn Evenson, Diane Gail Thompson, and Pamela Kay Tollefson.

Charles W. Wahlquist set up a law office in the Rosby Arcade this week. Mr. Wahlquist and his wife, Joyce, and son, Chipper, nine months old, returned recently from California where they had been for the past two years. 

Crowned “Beanie Queen” at the Morris Chamber of Commerce, sponsored UMM Mixer in the UMM gym Saturday evening, Sept. 21, was Lorna Halvorson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Halvorson of Starbuck. 

Mr. and Mrs. David Streed (Gail Billehus) of New Hope are the parents of a daughter, Sandra Jo, born Sept. 29.

50 YEARS AGO

From Oct. 4, 1973

The Pleasant Hill Troopers 4-H Club was named top club at the 1974 4-H Achievement Banquet Saturday night in Glenwood. Don Lundquist, Runestone Electric, Alexandria, presented the club award to Brenda Svenning, club secretary. 

It is said that one of the best exercises for good health is a nice long walk. Another plus for good health is a good hospital. Plans are now in process that could make both health needs available. The Western Pope County Hospital District, which is planning to build a new hospital, is sponsoring a ten mile walk for junior and high school students that live within the hospital district. 

The Starbuck Lions Club hit their 17th birthday Monday evening, no special observance was held. The Starbuck Club was chartered on October 1, 1956. Program for the evening was John Jackson, a student at the University of Minnesota, Morris. His great interest is Indian Artifacts which he has worked on for the past five years.

From Oct. 5, 1983

Army reserve Pvt. Roxanne Johnshoy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Johnshoy of Starbuck has completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. She is a 1982 graduate of Starbuck High School. 

Randy and Kristi Quitney of Montevideo are the parents of a son, Ryan Karl born October 1. 

Funeral services for Fred J. Tinseth, 90, of Cyrus were held from the Trinity Lutheran Church of Cyrus Oct. 1. He is survived by his wife, Mildred of Cyrus; and one son, Leslie of Kalispell, Montana. 

Kathy Frisbie of Lake Benton and Dan Pederson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steffen Pederson of Farwell were married August 13 at the First Lutheran Church of Brookings, SD. The couple will make their home in Brookings.

From Oct. 6, 1993

Carl J. Kleven received the 75th Anniversary of World War I Commemorative Medal last week, a gift of the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation. Kleven was a member of the United States Army and held the rank of Pvt. He entered active duty on March 14, 1918 and was honorably discharged July 11, 1919. Kleven served overseas in France during World War I.

Memorial services for Mrs. Vernon Larson, age 71, of Rancho Bernardo, CA will be held Oct. 7 at Fron Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband; two sons and two sisters, Ada Peterson of Starbuck and Jeneva Kirkwood of Lawrenceville, Illinois.

Miss Elainna Olson of Fosston and Kenneth Jellum of Starbuck were married August 28 at Indherred Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in Brooklyn Park.

Memorial services for Ruth Dordan, 50, of Richfield, were held Sept. 19 at the Cremation Society Chapel in Minneapolis. She is survived by one son, Kirtland: sister Emily Gullickson of Starbuck and four brothers, Jack Johnsrud, Kenny Johnsrud and Bob Johnsrud, all of Starbuck and her twin brother, Richard Johnsrud of Ashby.

The Minnewaska Medical Clinic is making plans to expand services into Kensington. Board members of the Western Pope County Hospital Board approved the move Wednesday night after hearing from CEO Tom Theroult that Kensington is underserved by health care providers and would benefit from being the first satellite clinic MMC will open. 

Minnewaska Regional Health System has plans in the works to expand its maternal child health program. The plans include expanding its prenatal and postpartum services, adding doula services and remodeling its birthing rooms. 

Project Starbuck members worked for years to build a sign welcoming visitors to Starbuck and now work begins on a second. One hurdle for the west gateway is electrical access. 

10 YEARS AGO

The Pope County HRA/EDA met for just over two hours on October 2. The board discussed being more active in other parts of the county due to people expressing to the board that they only do projects in Starbuck. 

Pope County leads the state in giving the gift of life to others in need: 74 percent of adults in the county are registered as organ and tissue donors on their driver’s license or state ID. On Tuesday, Pope County received recognition for this achievement from LifeSource.

The ladies at Creative Images Hair Salon are teaming up to raise money for breast cancer patients. Lisa Swensrud and Becky Krei will be holding a month long open house through October to celebrate and raise money for breast cancer awareness.
