110 YEARS AGO

From Nov. 21, 1913

A deal was made the early part of this week through which Elmer Wesen became the owner of the dray line which has been operated by M.E. Lattin for something over a year. Mr. Wesen was already the owner of the bug feed barn on Main Street which he bought from Mrs. C.C. Carlson early last summer. The dray and feed barn will make a very good combination and we feel certain that Mr. Wesen will make good in his new venture as he has made good on other positions before. 

The dearest baby the stork could convey has arrived from Cupid Land today. It’s a boy weighing 5 lbs. He will make his home with Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Brevig.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Skaret was made glad last Sunday morning by the arrival of a tiny baby girl. The joy however, soon turned to sorrow, as the little life passed away in a few hours. 

A bouncing baby boy has come to gladden the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Espelien last Tuesday. 

Born to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pederson on Thursday, a baby boy.

From Nov. 16, 1923

Anton Aaberg sold the Benson Produce building this week to John L. Lynch, their manager, with 19 feet frontage on the main street.

The DuGlada Theatre will show free to all school children in Pope County, the film “The Copperhead,” taken from the book with the same title, during Education week. This picture shows the life of Abraham Lincoln.  

Elmer Erickson and his crew returned from Appleton this week after putting in one of the longest jobs of guard rail in the state.

M.P. Eidberg bought a corn sheller from the Farmers Store this week that shells 100 bushels an hour. 

Miss Jennie M. Quammen and Mr. Magnus E. Thompson were united in marriage at the Central Lutheran church in Minneapolis Nov. 3. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Erick Thompson is Starbuck. 

E. Chalenburg opened his new hardware store last Saturday, and enjoyed a brisk trade during the day. He sold five copper boilers the first day. 

The Starbuck Milling Company is selling flour at $3.20 for 98 lb. sack contains a 10¢ coupon and every 49 lb. sack a 5¢ coupon, which will be redeemed for cash when presented by a Ladies Aid of any church.

90 YEARS AGO

From Nov. 16, 1933

A severe wind storm hit this area of the state last Sunday. The strong wind blew with such intensity that most people had to be content to stay indoors. Some snow fell at noon but it didn’t amount to very much. Towards evening the mercury began to drop and by Monday morning it was 3 degrees above zero. A number of small buildings were blown down, snow fences toppled and a wind mill on the Halfdon Toftner farm north of Cyrus blew down. 

Funeral services for Peter T. Peterson were conducted at the Rolling Forks church on Sunday. Rev. G.G. Beito officiating. Mr. Peterson is survived by his wife, six daughters, Mrs. Gertrude Engen, Mrs. Dagny Evjen, Alma, Olga, Pearl and Margaret; two sons, Orin and Leonard; five grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Josie Lane, Mrs. Dina Hopkins and Mrs. Rosie Shelso. 

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Anondson Friday. 

Senator Henrik Shipstead has been here making a survey of feed situations of drought problems in hopes of getting federal aid for this area. 

School notes from Dist. 38: The following pupils are on the honor roll with an average of 90 percent or more: Ruth Johnson, Elaine Nelson, and Alvina Gjerdingen. We have received our second set of letters from the pupils of Dist. 37. We enjoy the correspondence with our unseen friends.

School notes from Dist. 3: The following have perfect attendance so far this year: Mildred Christenson, John Nelson, Gladys Smedstad, Jacob Gorder, Mildred Olson, Walter Nelson, Harris Tessem, Betty Moe, and Nels Forde. We have organized a club called the “Sunny Side Society”. The officers are president Ralph Norland; vice president Arthur Finstad; Sec’y-treas.-Walter Nelson.

80 YEARS AGO

From Nov. 18, 1943

Funeral services for Maynard George Nyhusmoen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Selmer Nyhusmoen were held at the West Zion Lutheran Church Nov. 13. Maynard died from pneumonia at the age of three weeks and 3-1/2  days. He is survived by his parents, one brother, Sidney and two sisters, Viola and Lorraine. 

Mr. Josie Bottelson received a cablegram Tuesday from her son, Russell, who is in Italy, in which he stated that he had received their letters, was feeling fine and wished them a Merry Christmas. 

S/Sgt. Adlore Forbord, 24, of Benson, has been awarded the Gold Conduct Medal. He is the son of Albert Forbord of Benson. 

Mr. and Mrs. Freddie Runquist are the happy parents of a baby boy, Earle Cameron, weighing 7 lbs. 10 oz. born Nov. 8.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kjorstad entertained friends for dinner Sunday in honor of their daughter, Karen’s fourth birthday.

Report from District 12: Enrollment on the opening day was nine. The following pupils had perfect attendance the past six weeks: Casper Hegg, Jr., Ralph Ranum, David Ranum, Robert Kirkwold, Maxine Kirkwold. Those who earned “A’s” during the period were: David Ranum 4, Casper Hegg, Jr. 3., Allan Nygaard 3, Gladys Erickson 2, John Ranum 2, Maxine Kirkwold  2, Ralph Ranum 1 and Ellsworth Erickson 1.

The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Johnson was baptized Marcella Arlene Sunday at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Her sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. Arvid son of Danvers. 

Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gorder are the parents of a baby girl born at the Glenwood Hospital Nov. 13. 

Funeral services for Mrs. Caroline Olson, 87, were held at Minnewaska Lutheran Church Nov. 1. She is survived by the following children: Albert and Henry Olson of Starbuck, Ben Olson of Onamia, Clarence Olson and Mrs. Alfred (Orpha) Sando of Sauk Rapids, Nina Halvorson of St. Pail and Mrs. Martin (Bertha) Skeslien of Terrace. 

Miss Betty Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Williams of Starbuck and James Stavem, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Stavem of Lowry were married Nov. 8 at Fron Lutheran Church. 

Miss Marna Mickelson of Morris and Bert Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Olson of Starbuck, were married Oct. 31 at St. Petri Lutheran Church in Cyrus. The couple will make their home in Villard.

The SHS Senior class will present the play, “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” Thursday and Friday. Members of the cast are: Mark Brenden, Jerry Tharaldson, Mary Roiland, Suzanne Landgraf, Rebecca Barsness, Corrine Kjorstad, Janice Kirkwold, Susan Smedstad, Gene Berg, David Bardal, Richard Carlson, Rick Thorstad, Fran Thorstad, Corliss Pederson, Helen Disrud, Conrad Barsness and Steve Hippe. 

Relatives and friends helped Jeffrey Aaberg celebrate his 9th birthday Sunday at the Julius Aaberg home. 

Sgt. and Mrs. Richard Swanberg (Alta Evensvold), who are stationed in France, announced the birth of a son, Daniel Allen, born Thursday, Nov. 7.

Miss Geraldine Barsness, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ednard Barsness, and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Rasmussen, all of Starbuck, were married at the Minnewaska Lutheran Church Oct. 19. The couple will make their home in Morgan, MN.

The Pope County Commissioners have drawn up and submitted a proposal to redistrict Pope County according to Minnesota Statutes, Section 375.02, reported Melvin Heggestad, chairman of the board. The matter of redistricting the county was brought to a head recently when the City of Glenwood requested the District Court to render a decision and settle the issue. 

Garbage collection service was the main topic of discussion as the village council met in its regular session Thursday evening. The Village of Starbuck recently purchased a $10,000 unit for garbage pickup which complies with regulations for this type of service. 

The fund drive for the Pope County Hospital District is starting to pick up steam as early reports come in from the City of Starbuck. According to Virgil Amundson, treasurer of the district, as of Tuesday noon, $144,000 has been given either in cash or pledges. This is only Starbuck except for a sprinkling from White Bear Lake Township.

The Starbuck Centennial Committee received word last week that the World’s Largest Lefse made in Starbuck on July 2, 1983 during the centennial celebration has been accepted and recorded in Norway’s Book of Records “Schibsted.” 

Delton and Ruth (Baukol) Grussing are the parents of a daughter, Patricia Ruth, born Oct. 28 in Coon Rapids.

Nancy Schuett of Glenwood and Terry Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Brown of Starbuck, were married Sept. 17 at Fron Lutheran Church. The couple will make their home in Starbuck. 

Funeral services for Amy L. Solberg, 80, were held from the Fron Lutheran Church Nov. 16. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Julie) Pochardt of St. Cloud. 

Coach Bill Bailey was named Coach of the Year and eight Starbuck athletes were named to the All-Conference team at the Pheasant Conference meeting held last Wednesday. They were Chuck Freeman, John Lundebrek, Paul Malenke, Shaun Stottler and Doug Toivonen from the football team, and LaDona Anderson, Brenda Holten and Cindy Vatthauer from the volleyball team. 

Funeral services for Edwin Hendrickson, 85, were held from the  Fron Lutheran Church Nov. 5. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn and one son, Lyn Dale Hendrickson. 

Nannette Joanne Cahoon of Little Suamico, Wisconsin and Jeffrey Sorenson, son of Rosali Sorenson of Starbuck were married June 18 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Little Suamico. The couple will make their home in Minneapolis.

Funeral services for Irene Gosseling, 65, Clara City, were held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City Nov. 18. Among her survivors is a son, Dalen Gosseling of Starbuck.

Chris and Diane Buckingham announce the birth of a son, Dylan Thomas, born Nov. 6. 

Starbuck Elementary Students of the Month are Heather Nelson, Cory Greeley, Justin Holten, Allison Freeman, Isaac Thomas, Robert Gregory, Jr., Hannah Mauk, Todd Starns, Evan Staples, Mitchell Hoverud, Jesse Beaumia, Becky Greeley, Mike Tangen, Chelsie Barsness, Kelly Hendrickson, Matthew Waters, Heidi Solvie and Brady Danielson.

Dr. David Przymus, a native of Wheaton, MN has joined the Pope County Eye Clinic as optometrist.

Minnewaska Area School officials are already making preliminary plans to make radical cuts to programs and personnel because of last week’s failed levy referendum. Specifics have yet to be determined, but Bob Vaadeland, school superintendent, said that the cuts will be deep.

  Starbuck City Council members were caught a little off guard at their regular meeting on Nov. 10 after police chief Bruce Gilbertson announced his retirement. “There comes a time where you burn out and its better to get some new blood and new ideas in,” he said. Gilbertson added that there are some problems in the department, though he did not specify what those were. 

The Pope County Board of Commissioners tackled a problem that many employers are now confronting. Internet access is fast becoming a necessity in the work place, however, allowing that access can, at times, lead to abuse. The board confronted the issue as there has been abuse in the past, so at the board’s regular meeting it passed an addendum to its information technology policy.

The Minnesota Department of Health recently redesigned Glacial Ridge Hospital as a Level 4 Trauma Center. GRH was one of the first hospitals in Minnesota to receive a trauma designation in 2008. Glacial Ridge Hospital and staff voluntarily participated in the intense re-designation process to continue to be a part of Minnesota’s state-wide trauma system. The process included an outside review of the hospital’s resources and capabilities to care for trauma patients. Glacial Ridge Hospital met standards of commitment, clinical and equipment resources and staff training. The hospital also participates in continuous performance improvement processes. 

The Starbuck Beautification Committee got together on November 8 to put lights on the Aspen trees that are put out on the four corners of Starbuck’s main street. Pictured in the Tribune are Victor Vatthauer and Ron Feigum who helped tie the trees to the planters so they are stable in the wind. Also pictured are Darlene Femrite, Karen Hudson and Lorie Billehus.
