The Minnewaska Area wrestling team had a busy week last week, competing in three separate competitions over a five-day span.

The Lakers split a pair of matches at the BOLD triangular last Tuesday, beating the host Warriors, 54-17, but also losing to Canby, 48-25.  Two nights later, the Lakers fell to WCA/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville in a WCC matchup, 45-21.

Minnewaska was also set to compete at the Thief River Falls Invite, Saturday, but results of that competition will be highlighted next week. The only scheduled date this week finds the Lakers set to host Morris Area, Tuesday (tomorrow).

The top records for the Lakers so far this season are owned by Miles Wildman (15-2), Landon Schiffler (15-5), Chase Smith (13-7), Jayce Kovarik (7-2) and Myles Reichmann (10-8).

The Lakers split a pair of matches at the BOLD triangular last Tuesday, beating the host Warriors in a conference match, 54-17, but also losing to Canby in a non-conference matchup, 48-25.  Canby beat BOLD in the other match, 62-10, to claim the title at the triangular.

During the match against BOLD, there were four forfeit wins by the Lakers, five pins and one double-forfeit at 152 pounds.

Alex Adams won the first match on a forfeit and Landon Schiffler earned a 27-second pin at 114 pounds before BOLD earned its first win at 121 pounds.

Miles Wildman earned a pin in 1:59 at 127 pounds, followed by a 58-second pin by Jude Bailey at 133 and a forfeit win at 139 pounds by Chase Smith for a 30-6 Minnewaska lead.

BOLD earned a technical fall at 145 pounds and there was a double-forfeit at 152 before BOLD earned its last victory with a quick pin at 160 pounds to cut the Waska lead to 30-17.

The Lakers made it a rout with four-straight wins to end the match.  Jayce Kovarik earned a forfeit win at 172 pounds, Myles Reichmann won by a pin in 3:21 at 189, Riley Dell earned another forfeit win at 215 pounds and Eric Bowen ended the match with a pin in 1:07 at 285 pounds.

•  Things didn’t go as well against the strong Canby team, as the Lakers won five matches, including pins by Chase Smith at 133 (1:42) and Riley Dell at 215 (:12), along with a forfeit win by Myles Reichmann at 189 pounds and victories by Landon Schiffler (14-4 major) and Cole Kittelson (4-2).  “We had some great matches, but injuries have prevented a full lineup and as you well know, spotting teams like Canby (Tuesday) and WCA (Thursday) 18 to 24 points is hard to overcome,” coach Chip Rankin said.

WCA 45, Waska 21

The Lakers gave up four forfeit losses during a 45-21 loss at West Central Area, Thursday.  Take away those 24 points and the two teams tied in the other nine matches, 21-21.

Minnewaska Area won five matches as Landon Schiffler opened up the contest with an 11-7 victory at 107 pounds and Miles Wildman followed with a pin in 2:52 for a quick 9-0 Laker lead.

WCA won the next three matches to go up 18-9 before Isaiah Rosario earned a 6-2 victory at 139 pounds to cut the deficit to 18-12.

WCA, which leads the WCC with a perfect 5-0 record, picked up a forfeit and pin in the next two matches to increase its lead to 30-12.

Jayce Kovarik earned an 11-6 victory at 160 pounds and Cole Kittelson came through with a pin in 5:46 to pull the Lakers to within 30-21 and keep their hopes alive, but WCA clinched the win with a pin at 189 pounds and also earned a 4-3 victory over Riley Dell at 215 pounds before ending the match with its fourth forfeit victory.
