Waterama Board of Directors

Thank you for your continued interest in and support of Waterama. We appreciate the feedback and discussions regarding the parade route and would like to take this opportunity to provide some clarity on our decision-making process.

Since the completion of the road construction in 2018, we have carefully considered the feedback received from the community. We understand that there are differing opinions on this matter, and we have taken all viewpoints into account.

Two years ago, we convened with local law enforcement, EMTs, the Fire Department, and the City of Glenwood to discuss the potential advantages and disadvantages of both the new and original parade routes. After thorough deliberation and consultation, it was collectively agreed that the current route better serves the needs of emergency services and enhances public safety.

Maintaining the current route minimizes the strain on manpower for the police department by avoiding the need to block major roads through town. Additionally, it ensures smoother access to their respective buildings for the fire department and EMTs, enhancing overall safety measures.

Moreover, as time has passed, we have observed the positive aspects of the current route. The growth of trees along 5th Street Southeast and 8th Avenue Southeast offers increased shade for spectators, enhancing their parade viewing experience. We have also received feedback from residents of Glenwood Retirement Village, who greatly appreciate the opportunity to view the parade from their location, which might not be feasible if the route were changed back to its original path.

We understand and value the community’s desire to showcase downtown Glenwood during the parade and recognize the importance of community input, which we have taken seriously. We want to assure you the Waterama Board of Directors took everything into account in making our decision while focusing on considerations for safety, accessibility, and the overall well-being of our residents and visitors. With that in mind, and after lengthy discussion, deliberation, and consultation with all parties, we have made the decision to maintain the current route.

Again, we appreciate the recent route input the community has given for the Waterama parade and are grateful for the continuing support of our yearly festival.  It’s because of this we wanted to be transparent regarding the decisions we have made on this subject over the last few years.

For those who are interested, we would like to extend an invitation to community members who want to get more involved. The Waterama Board of Directors is currently seeking volunteers to serve on various committees. Without the dedication, support, and commitment of volunteers, Waterama would not be the regionally acclaimed and cherished event that it is today.
