Students to attend school in June due to snow days

March 26, 1964 – Workmen for Ogdahl Construction began work tearing down the old county jail and sheriff’s residence. The jail had been condemned by the state of Minnesota the previous year, having housed county prisoners for over 65 years. The county’s prisoners were currently housed in St. Cloud at the Stearns County facility. 

Twenty-six declam students were to participate in the district speech meet. Among them were LaVonne Jenks, Gretchen Sherlin, Kathy Sprank, Ruth Dutchak, Linda Lyslo, Cathy Motis, Vicki Lund, Bonnie Anderson, Kay Halter, Kristin Kinney, Jeanne Sonestahl, Linda Schroeder, Marcella Rosten, Jim Smith, Janet Femrite, Renae Jacobson, William Zubke, Chuck Christopherson, Janis Hustad, Bob Vollrath, Linda Goracke, Terry Anderson, Peggy Blair, Mary Boe, Elizabeth Pawlitschek and Diane Backman. 

March 28, 1974 – Julie Hanson and Dave Serrin were named Girl and Boy Starters from Glenwood’s Central High School. Sandra Jo Peterson and Mike Stackpool were alternates. Three students were named in the nation. They were, according to Gunnar Fosker, their instructor, Les LaCroix, Jane Kinney and Darrell Anderson. The three were selected based on national test performances. And three Glenwood declam students brought home trophies from a meet at Southwest State in Marshall. They were Deb Churchill, Sue Peterson and Kathy Bryce.

The effects of increased state aid and homestead credit on townships and cities became evident as county auditor Bill Boyle released local government tax figures. Overall, Pope County townships were seeking more money for their needs.

Mary Jane Churchill, administrator at the Glenwood Community Hospital, announced the establishment of a respiratory therapy department designed to care for people with chronic lung ailments and for post-surgery patients. 

March 29, 1984 – Fire destroyed Phil McMahon’s barn and killed 43 lambs and 32 ewes as well as four bucks and tolls and antiques. 

Dick Hanson announced that he would run in the Seventh Congressional District. 

Hanson, a 34-year-old farmer, was currently serving on the National Democratic Committee and had long been active in party politics.

Carl Eller, a former Minnesota Vikings football player, was in Glenwood to speak to school kids about the evils of drug abuse and his own battle with drugs. Eller’s program also included an evening meeting, which was open to the public.

March 28, 1994 – The Minnewaska Area Schools Board of Education was to hire three new teachers at the high school level. Enrollment was expected to increase to 901 students from the previous 858.

With the teacher contracts having been ratified the previous January, the Minnewaska Area School board approved pay adjustments for its administrative staff. The contracts would differ in amounts because of position and because of the number of days worked. 

Two Brooten men were charged with offering and accepting bribes in a project that allegedly cost the Department of Housing and Urban Development $282,000. The indictment, the result of a federal grand jury in Minneapolis, alleged the two men sought this money through the HUD Small Cities Grant Program to establish a whey drying plant.

Misty Burns, Robin Himango and Josie Hoffman, members of the Minnewaska Lakers girls’ basketball team, were selected to the West Central South Division all-conference basketball team. All three girls were seniors at Minnewaska Area High School. 

March 22, 2004 – Joe Bryce, a Glenwood native, took sixth place for All-American status in the NCAA Division II national wrestling competition at Bresnan Arena in Mankato. 

After reviewing and approving of the latest set of drawings for a new Lakeside Ballroom, the Glenwood City Commission gave the nod for construction documents to be created. The estimated cost of the new design, $1,720,435, also fits the city’s construction budget for the project of $1,785,000. Much more detailed drawings would be created, utilizing the skills of structural and mechanical engineers, and decisions would be made on specific design aspects of the building.  

March 24, 2014 – School board members, staff and two architectural firms are continuing their task to evaluate the district’s buildings, what needs to be done to them and how they should be used. There are some obvious needs, such as the repair or replacement of the roof at Minnewaska Area High School, which has been the subject of school board meetings for years, and some less obvious but appropriate things to study, such as school security. 

Thanks to a bunch of snow days, students at Minnewaska Area Schools will be attending class on June 2 and 3. The district’s school board approved adding the days at its regular meeting last week. In the event of still another snow day, the district could add June 4 without spilling over a weekend for either student days or teacher days. 

Representatives from the City of Glenwood, Pope County, Glenwood & Beyond, the Glenwood Lakes Area Chamber, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and area residents gathered at the Glenwood Lakes Area Chamber office last Wednesday evening to check in on the progress of a major improvement project coming to downtown Glenwood.
