The Minnewaska Area track and field teams opened up the outdoor schedule with a pair of meets at Morris and Litchfield last week.

The Laker girls won the “Marv Meyer” meet at Morris last Tuesday and also won the 5-team meet at Litchfield, Thursday, while the Minnewaska Area boys were second at Morris and third at Litchfield.

This week, the Lakers have two more meets, including the first home invitational, Monday, April 15 (moved up a day from April 16 due to rain forecast) followed by a meet at Pierz, Thursday, April 18.

Morris Invitational

The Minnewaska girls track team won the team title at the 9-team Morris Invitational last Tuesday night, getting first place finishes from Olivia Danielson in the 800 meter run (2:32.1) and the 3200 meter relay.

Scoring at the meet went 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 with the top eight place finishers scoring points for their team.

Minnewaska totaled 140.5 points to beat out runner-up Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale (106) and third-place Melrose Area (102.5) for the title.

The Lakers placed third in the 400 (55.44), 800 (1:58.75) and 1600 meter relays (4:25.91) in addition to winning the 3200 meter relay.  Individual relay members were not available.

Lauryn Ankeny was third in the 300 meter hurdles (49.19), while Aubrey Stark also picked up a point by placing eighth (57.15).

In the 100 hurdles, Brooklyn Meyer was fifth (19.15) and Lyla Stadtherr earned seventh (19.59).

Dacia Fleury earned second in the 200 meter dash (28.79) and fifth in the 100 (13.6), while Ella Larson was fourth in the 800 meter run (2:36.34),  and Maia Larson was fourth (6:11.85) and Jillian Deutsch seventh (6:19) in the 1600 meter run.

The Lakers earned major points in the 3200 meter run as Sydney Ankeny was third (13:31.77), Sophia Wallin was fourth (13:55.72), Izzy Bautista placed sixth (14:35.92) and Sophia Wallin earned seventh (14:41.46).

Minnewaska also had a number of top finishes in the field events.  Dacia Fleury was third in the triple jump (31-2), Lauryn Ankeny earned sixth in the long jump (13-7 1/2), Phemie Oeltjen was seventh in the high jump (4-8) and also second in the pole vault (7-6) with Kendra Wilmes earning sixth (6-6) and Lexi Bosek placing seventh (6-6).

In the shot put, Jayda Kolstoe earned second (36-8 1/4) and Mya VanLuik was eighth (28-8), while in the discus, Olivia Danielson earned third (87-5), Kolstoe was fourth (87-5) and VanLuik earned sixth (84-9).

•  In the boys meet, Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale won just three individual titles but still won the team title with 124 points, while Minnewaska Area was second with 119 points and Lac qui Parle third with 107 in the 10-team field.

Earning firsts for the Lakers were Maeson Tank in the 400 (51.27) and 800 meter (2:06) races.  His time in the 400 is less than a second off the school record of 50.33 and is under the state-qualifying time of 51.4.

In addition, Owen Meulebroeck won the 300 meter hurdles (41.47), the 1600 meter relay team earned first with a time of 3:42.06, the 3200 meter relay was second (9:23.09) and the 400 relay (46.91) and 800 relay (1:41.08) both placed third.

It was a good day for the hurdles as Hunter Stadsvold was also fourth in the 110 meter hurdles (17.31) and 300 meter hurdles (47.44).

Carter Meyer led a strong performance by the Lakers in the sprints with a third in the 100 meter dash (11.46) and fifth in the 200 (23.91), while Kolton Rogers placed second in the 200 (22.78), Kaiden Harvey was seventh in the 200 (25.09) and Jeythan Quirindongo earned sixth in the 100 (11.91).

Zach Palmer picked up five points with a fourth in the 3200 meter run (11:16.78) and Ian Mills placed fifth (11:22.46), while Carter Dinsmore added a sixth in the 800 meter run (2:24.34) and Luke Hoffmann placed seventh (2:24.71).

In the field events, Jayce Kovarik was fourth (10-0) and Mason Danielson eighth (8-0) in the pole vault, Josh Hippe earned eighth in the long jump (17-3 1/2), Kenneth Czech was eighth in the discus (105-4), and Harvey earned fifth (37-3) and Meulebroeck was seventh (36-6) in the triple jump.

In the boys meet, Minnewaska had four individual firsts, while Ortonville, LQP and BHV each had three champions.

Litchfield Invitational

The girls won their second meet of the week, earning the 5-team title at Litchfield with 169 points to edge Litchfield (153 points) and EVW-Kimball (151.5) for the overall title.

Piper Citrowske-Lee won the 1600 meter run for one of three titles for the Lakers, while Dacia Fleury won the triple jump (32-0) and the 3200 meter relay team of Ella Larson, Alia Randt, Lauryn Ankeny and Olivia Danielson were victorious with a time of 10:28.85.

Ankeny was also second in the 300 hurdles (49.92), while Fleury was second in the 100 meter dash (13.72), Olivia Danielson was third in the 800 meter run (2:32.28), Ella Larson was fourth (1:08.17) and Aubrey Polzin fifth (1:08.53) in the 400 meter dash, Maia Larson was second (6:16.23) and Jillian Deutsch third (6:17.62) in  the 1600 meter run, and Sydney Ankeny was second (13:18.76), Sophia Wallin fourth (14:07.11) and Izzy Bautista fifth (14:11.75) in the 3200 meter run.

Phemie Oeltjen added a pair of fourths in the high jump (4-8) and pole vault (7-6), while Lauryn Ankeny was second (30-1) and Randt third (29-6) in the triple jump, Jayda Kolstoe was second in the shot put (35-7 1/2) and the 1600 meter relay team of Ella Larson, Polzin, Danielson and Lauryn Ankeny placed second with a time of 4:27.12.

EVW-Kimball won eight of the 18 events, but the Lakers’ depth earned them the team title.

•  In the boys meet, Annandale earned the title with 177.5 points, while EVW-Kimball (158.5) and Minnewaska (150.5 points) were right behind.

Earning titles for the Lakers were Owen Meulebroeck in the 300 hurdles (42.55), Maeson Tank in the 400 meter dash (52.65), Jayce Kovarik in the pole vault (10-6), the 1600 meter relay team of Carter Meyer, Kovarik, Meulebroeck and Tank (3:40.46) and the 3200 meter relay team of Carter Dinsmore, Luke Hoffmann, Kovarik and Tank (8:48.23).

Meulebroeck was also second in the 110 hurdles (16.59), while Hunter Stadsvold was third in the 300 hurdles (47.15) and fourth in the high hurdles (18.03).

Meyer was also fourth in the 400 meter dash (11.8), while Jeythan Quirindongo was fifth in the 200 (25.23), Zach Palmer was second in the 1600 meter run (5:08.21) and third in the 3200 meter run (11:10.32) and Ian Mills was third in the 3200 (11:17.92) and fourth in the 1600 (5:11.53).

The 400 relay added a third place (47.58), the 800 relay was fourth (1:43.45), Kenneth Czech was fifth in the discus (108-11), Mason Danielson was fifth in the pole vault (8-0) and Kaiden Harvey was third (37-6) and Meulebroeck fourth (37-6) in the triple jump.
