Serena Mellgren (Swimming-diving)

Serena Mellgren, a senior with the Minnewaska-Morris Gators swimming and diving team, is the second Minnewaska Area “Athlete of the Week” for the 2022-23 school year, selected by Sam Oellien, the head coach of the Gators’ swimming and diving team.  Serena is the daughter of Dr. Gustave and Janis Mellgren.

She placed first for the Lakers during the recent Montevideo meet in the 50 freestyle and also raced on two winning relays and placed second in the 100 butterfly.  At Albany, she was first with the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

“Serena is one of our fast freestyle swimmers and holds an important spot on our freestyle relays,” coach Oellien said.  “She is also willing to step up and swim wherever the team needs her.  During our meet in Montevideo, I put her in the 100 fly, a tough race for anyone.  Serena not only got through the race, but swam a section-cut time.  I look forward to seeing the rest of the season with Serena and where she heads off to next.”
