The Minnewaska Area softball team picked up its first win last week with an 8-7 victory at Montevideo.  The Lakers were swept in a doubleheader at Melrose to open up the week last Tuesday, losing 14-0 and 15-3.  Two nights later, the Lakers won the first game against Montevideo before losing the nightcap, 18-7.  Overall, the Lakers are 1-7, which includes a 1-6 mark in the WCC.

Another busy week is in store for the Lakers as the team is set to play a doubleheader at Morris Area, Tuesday (tomorrow) before playing a game at WCA, Thursday, and hosting Lakeview for a single game, Friday, May 12.

Melrose 14-15, Waska 0-3

The Lakers were swept in a doubleheader at Melrose last Tuesday night, 14-0 and 15-3.  The two losses lowered the team’s overall record to 0-6 and conference mark to 0-4.

In the first game, Melrose scored six runs in the second and third innings to end the game early due to the 10-run rule.

Ally Mogard went 2-for-2 for the Lakers, while Grace Larson, Emara Sanow, Mataya Mix and Leslie Murken also had hits for Minnewaska.

Mataya Mix took the loss on the mound, giving up seven hits, four earned runs and five walks over four innings with three strikeouts. Jenna Drewes reached on a hit-by-pitch, but otherwise, Melrose did not allow any walks or commit any errors.

•  In the second game, the Lakers’ offense came alive, but it still wasn’t enough as Melrose scored 14 runs in the second inning on the way to a 15-3 victory, shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Ally Mogard went 2-for-3 with a double and Trelana Johnson was 2-for-2 with an RBI and stolen base to lead the Lakers’ offense.

Minnewaska scored one run in the second and two more in the fifth.

Adding one hit each were Jenna Drewes, Ella Roering, Emma Poegel and Lauren Stryhn, while Leslie Murken took the loss on the mound, scattering 11 hits and seven earned runs with nine walks and five strikeouts.

Waska 8-7, Monte 7-18

The Lakers split a doubleheader at Montevideo, Thursday night, winning the first game 8-7 before losing the nightcap, 18-7.

In the first game, the Lakers trailed 6-4 after four innings before scoring four over the last three innings.

Mataya Mix earned the complete-game victory, giving up 16 hits, five runs and three walks with three strikeouts, while three players had two hits each on offense.

Jenna Drewes was 2-for-4 with a run and stolen base, while Grace Larson was 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and walk, and Mix was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Adding one hit and one run was Emma Poegel, while Lauren Stryhn had a walk and run scored and Leslie Murken had an RBI and walk.

•  In the second game, Montevideo scored 11 runs in the sixth inning to end the game early due to the 10-run rule.  Minnewaska led 1-0 after two innings and trailed just 4-3 after three, but Montevideo scored three in the fourth and 11 more in the sixth.

Lily Eisenlohr went 3-for-5 with four runs scored in the second game for Montevideo after going 4-for-5 in the first game.

Ella Roering went 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and stolen base to lead the Laker offense, while Emma Poegel, Leslie Murken, Kylee Klassen and Mataya Mix also had hits for the Lakers. Murken took the loss in the second game, giving up 14 hits, 14 earned runs and six walks with five strikeouts.
