The Minnewaska Area wrestling team went 2-1 at the Redwood Valley quadrangular, Thursday.  The Lakers, who improved to 4-3 for the season, beat Redwood Valley (63-18) and Fulda-Murray County Central (42-34), but fell to Minneota (49-22) in the other match.

Going 3-0 for the Lakers were Miles Wildman at 106 pounds, Chase Smith at 126, Jayce Kovarik at 145-152, Chase Boelke at 195 and Noah Jensen at 220, while Nick Ankeny was 2-0 at 138 pounds.

“Minneota is state-ranked and a top contender to win our section 5A. Overall, I thought it was a solid performance for our team following a 12-day break for the holidays and weather,” coach Chip Rankin said.  “We have some conditioning work to do and we have to start cutting some guys to their tournament weights to be more competitive, but I’m pretty happy with the boys and our progress so far this season. Among the standouts was Noah Jensen, who went 3-0 with two pins, including a very quality win against FMC to seal the win.”

This week, the Lakers are set to wrestle at the Morris Area triangular, Thursday, before hosting the first meet at home, Friday, the Minnewaska Area Invitational, followed by a home quadrangular, Tuesday, Jan. 17.

at Redwood triangular

The Lakers went 2-1 at the Redwood Valley triangular, Thursday, losing to a strong Minneota team that is expected to contend for the Section 5A title while also beating Redwood Valley and Fulda-MCC.

In the loss to Minneota, the Lakers earned five victories, including pins by Miles Wildman at 106 pounds in 1:46 and by Noah Jensen at 220 pounds in 58 seconds.

Other victories for the Lakers included a 17-4 major decision by Chase Smith at 126 pounds, a 4-2 win by Jayce Kovarik at 145 and an 8-2 victory by Chase Boelke at 195 pounds.

•  Four-straight wins from 170 to 220 pounds turned a 28-21 deficit into a 42-28 lead as the Lakers won eight of the 14 matches to earn a 42-34 victory over Fulda-MCC.

Miles Wildman (3:47), Chase Smith (3:53), Myles Reichmann (5:35), Xander Johnson (1:24) and Chase Boelke (1:16) had pins for the Lakers to give them 30 points, while Jayce Kovarik had a technical fall win at 152 pounds, Nick Ankeny earned a 15-7 major at 138 pounds, and Noah Jensen clinched the victory for the Lakers with a 4-3 win at 220 pounds.

•  In the final match, a 63-18 rout of Redwood Valley, the Lakers earned three forfeit wins by Alex Admas (106 pounds), Miles Wildman (113) and Myles Reichmann (170), along with pins by Chase Smith at 126 pounds (3:05), Nick Ankeny at 138 (3:31), Mason Schiffler at 145 (5:50), Nathan Dell at 160 (3:19), Xander Johnson at 182 (1:58), Chase Boelke at 195 (:48) and Noah Jensen at 220 (3:26).

The Lakers, who won eight-straight matches from 138-220 pounds, also picked up three points on a 13-8 win by Jayce Kovarik at 152 pounds.
